Steve Mackey (born 10 November 1966) is an English musician and record producer, best known as the bassist for the alternative rock group Pulp who he formed in 1989. As a producer of records, Mackey has recorded albums and songs by M.I.A., Florence + the Machine, The Long Blondes and Arcade Fire.

In 2005, Mackey was a cameo in the film as one of the Weird Sisters rock group in the movie Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire. The fictional group also included Jonny Greenwood as well as Phil Selway of Radiohead and Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker.

Forming a songwriting/production partnership with Ross Orton (known as Cavemen), he met Maya Arulpragasam (M.I.A.) and co-wrote and produced “Galang” and “Sunshowers” which led to MIA securing a deal with Interscope Records and releasing “Arular”. They worked together again on “Bird Flu” from her subsequent album Kala. Mackey and Orton continued to produce and remix for artists including Kelis, Cornershop, The Kills and The Horrors. Mackey also produced and co-wrote songs for Florence and the Machine’s debut album “Lungs”, including “Kiss With a Fist”, “Girl With One Eye” and ” Swimming” and also The Long Blondes debut album Someone to Drive you Home. During this period he continued to record and tour with Jarvis Cocker, in 2006 for his debut solo album for Rough Trade Records (Jarvis) and again in 2008 recording the album Further Complications at Electrical Studios, Chicago with Steve Albini.

In 2009, Mackey married his longtime girlfriend, stylist and fashion journalist, Katie Grand. He lives in North London with his wife, and son, Marley (born 1996).

From 2003 until from 2003 to Mackey was the co-curator of the music program at the London’s annually held Frieze International Art Fair which included performances by Karlheinz Stockhausen, Sunn O ))), Glenn Branca, and Rodney Graham.

Mackey is a native of Sheffield, South Yorkshire. When he was a child, he was a student at Hucklow First and Middle Schools together with his best fellow student Richard Hawley. They later played together as part of Pulp. He attended school in the Hinde House Comprehensive in Sheffield and then continued his education through Richmond College of Further Education. Prior to joining Pulp as a bassist, he was a bassist for a different Sheffield band , called Trolley Dog Shag. They were featured along with Pulp on an album called Dolebusters album compilation in 1987. He relocated into London the year 1988 in pursuit of a passion in filmmaking. He graduated from the London’s Royal College of Art, in 1992. He graduated with an MA Film.

When he joined Pulp around 1989, the singer performed on Separations that was recorded on Fire Records. He continued to record, write and perform with the group after they gained popularity in the 90s. The subsequent albums they made by the band included Intro The Gift Recordings, Intro The Gift Recordings, His and His, Different Class, This Is Hardcore and We Love Life. After a hiatus of 8 years, Mackey returned to the scene with Pulp in 2010 , followed by tour dates in 2012 and 2011 as well as they released their debut single “After You”, working with producer James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem.

In 2006, Mackey and Cocker curated an acclaimed 2 CD Compilation called The Trip featuring music from various eras including Moondog, Carl Orff, The Birthday Party, The Fall and the theme to Radio 4’s Shipping Forecast.
