Lillywhite started his career in the industry in 1972 while working as an operator of tapes for Polygram. He created a demo album for Ultravox which resulted in the band being offered a recording deal for the record label Island Records. Lillywhite later was hired by Island as a producer on staff and worked with some of the most prominent New Wave musicians such as his brother’s band, The Members, and guitarist Johnny Thunders, for whom the album he recorded was his own entitled So Alone. The first commercial success he had was in the month of August 1978 when he was the producer for “Hong Kong Garden”, the first single by Siouxsie The Banshees and Siouxsie. He also co- produced “Ku Klux Klan”, the first single Steel Pulse released on Island Records in 1978. The year 1979 was the time he had two hits on Virgin Records with The Members including the Surrey song “Sound of the Suburbs” and the protest reggae classic “Offshore Banking Business”. Lillywhite and Engineer Hugh Padgham began working with The band XTC in the months of June and July 1979, at Townhouse Studios in London for Virgin Records. The result: XTC’s 3rd studio album Drums and Wires was released on the 17th of August 1979 “Making Plans for Nigel” the track from the album, reached the top spot of 17th place at the top of the UK Singles Chart in the autumn of the year. It’s a classic instance of the distinctive big drum sound of Lillywhite and Padgham.
In February 1980, Psychedelic Furs’ self-titled debut album was released. It was made by Lillywhite. He also co-produced Peter Gabriel’s highly acclaimed 3rd solo record Peter Gabriel (also known as III or Melt) that first came out in of 1980 and debuted at the top of the UK album charts. The album established Gabriel to be “one of rock’s most ambitious, innovative musicians” and “raised considerably” Lillywhite’s profile. When he recorded U2, he invented (with Gabriel and engineer Hugh Padgham) the”gated” reverb sound that became the hallmark in Phil Collins’ solo career. Later that period, Boy, the debut album by U2 was released, composed by Lillywhite. Lillywhite’s work in the band U2 was continued in the release of November and War. The producer went on to create music with Bruce Foxton (of The Jam), Big Country, XTC, The Chameleons, Toyah, Talking Heads, Eddie and the Hot Rods, Morrissey, The Rolling Stones and the Shine album of former ABBA vocalist Anni Fred Lyngstad. Lillywhite was also employed by Rush to record their 1984 album Grace Under Pressure but, to their dismay and discontent, he resigned from the project to join forces in conjunction with Simple Minds. Alex Lifeson, Geddy Lee along with Neil Peart referred to Lillywhite as a man who was not on the word of keeping his word on the project that was already planned.
Lilywhite was featured as the subject for a BBC Radio 1 documentary series on record producers. In 1999, he produced the US band Guster’s Lost and Gone Forever.
