Kirsch developed and patented one of the first versions of optical mice. In 2007 his net worth stood at around $230 million, with the major portion of which came through his participation in the IPO of Infoseek as well as his acquisition of Frame Technology.
In September of 2011, he launched OneID which creates an internet-scale digital identity for users. It is a user-centric system that relies on the public-key cryptography method to substitute passwords and usernames with a single safe, stable digital identity that protects privacy and is in accordance with objectives of the NSTIC. This technology was utilized in 2013 by Salsa Labs in 2013, to improve the amount and security for online donation.
On August 11 on the 11th of August, 2007 Kirsch posted on his personal site that he was diagnosed with Waldenstrom’s macroglobulinemia. It is one of the rare types of blood cancer. His cancer was shrinking the result of treatment with an experimental HDAC inhibitor, LBH-589.
