Sterling Alex Hitchcock (born April 29th 1971) is an American former Major League Baseball left-handed pitcher. He was a player from 1992 until 2004 predominantly with the New York Yankees and San Diego Padres.
The success of his time as a player for the Padres were later followed by a series of injuries. He underwent Tommy John surgery. His surgery was successful. Padres swapped Hitchcock again to the Yankees in mid-2001, for two minor league pitchers. Hitchcock was the winner of the Yankees in Game 5 of the 2001 World Series. He signed with the Yankees following the season. In 2003, the Yankees made a trade of Hitchcock for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2003 in exchange for Justin Pope and Ben Julianel. He ended his career with the Padres in 2004.
The next winter the Mariners transferred Hitchcock the following winter to San Diego for Scott Sanders. Hitchcock is most famous for his performance during the 1998 playoffs for the Padres during which Hitchcock was awarded one of the NLCS MVP. He was the winner in each of his starts, with an 0.90 ERA in the NLCS. In the overall 1998 playoffs the team was 3-1 and allowed three runs over the course of 23 innings (1.23 ERA) with 32 strikeouts.

The Yankees chose Hitchcock at the nineth pick of 1989’s Major League Baseball Draft. Although he had committed to South Florida’s University of South Florida, the Yankees signed Hitchcock with an initial $50,000 bonus for signing. Hitchcock was able to make his Major League debut in 1992 after his first full year in the 1994 season. His contract was sold to the Mariners following the 1995 season along with Russ Davis for Tino Martinez, Jeff Nelson, and Jim Mecir.
In the regular season Hitchcock’s best win-loss record in his career was 13-9 for Seattle at the time of 1996. His best career ERA is 3.93 in 1998 with the Padres in 1998.
