Stephen Stahl is one of the most popular and richest Psychiatrist who was born on September 14, 1951 in Wauseon, Ohio, United States. Stahl is the author of more than 500 book chapters, articles, as well as more than 1600 scientific papers and abstracts. He has published 35 texts and edited twelve more which include the top-selling and highly acclaimed Stahl’s Essential Psychopharmacology, now in its fourth edition as well as the Essential Psychopharmacology Prescriber’s Guide, which is now in the fifth edition. He also released the novel of a thriller called Shell Shock.
In 2002, The International College of Neuropsychopharmacology honoured Stahl with the Lundbeck Foundation Award in Education for contributions to postgraduate education in psychiatry and neurology.
In 2015, Northwestern University, his alma mater, honored him by naming their annual award for the best medical student going into psychiatry the Stephen Stahl award.
He is an internationally recognized authority in psychiatry having published over 500 scientific papers, edited 12 textbooks and personally written 35 text books including the two best-selling textbooks in the field of psychiatry and psychopharmacology over the past twenty years. He has contributed significantly to the field of psychopharmacology through his research in the 70s, 80s and 90s, especially in the area of serotonin, schizophrenia and depression. In addition to his many academic contributions, Stahl is known for his 2015 novel Shell Shock and his expert contribution to exposing inadequate mental health care for returning soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan.
Stahl began his career at Stanford University in 1981 as an assistant professor in Psychology and Behavioural Sciences. He taught there until 1985 when he was appointed an adjunct associate professor of psychiatry , the pharmacology of behavioural sciences in Stanford University. University of California Los Angeles while working and living abroad to the UK where was a professor in the Institute of Psychiatry, London as a Senior Lecturer, and in the Institute of Neurology and the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases, London also as an Senior Lecturer. He was an Honorary Consultant in the field of psychiatry in the Maudsley Hospital, London from 1985 until 1988. In 1988, he was appointed to the University of California, San Diego as a professor of psychiatry and the chief of psychotherapy in the San Diego Veterans Affairs Hospital. He is currently an adjunct instructor at University of California San Diego.

- earned his B.S. degree at Northwestern University and received his M.D. in the year 1975 from Northwestern University. Then, in the year 1976, he earned an Ph.D. in Neuropharmacology from the University of Chicago. Then, he completed his training as an internist at the University of Chicago, in neurology at the University of California, San Francisco and in psychotherapy within Stanford University. Board certified, he is in the field of psychiatry. The year 1981 was the first time he finished his residency in psychotherapy at Stanford and was appointed deputy director for the Stanford Mental Health Clinical Research Center and also an assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences in the Stanford University Medical School where the position lasted until 1985.
The year was 1981 when he was the director of the Movement Disorders & Psychopharmacology Research Clinic at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Palo Alto and chief of the Schizophrenia Biological Research Center and was there until 1985. Parallel to this, he was also working for Alza Corporation as the Alza Corporation as director of clinical sciences, as well as associate medical director, and principal scientist from 1982 until 1985. He then was recruited by in 1985 with the Merck & Co. Research Laboratories and relocated into their neuroscience research Centre located outside from London in 1985. Here was he worked until 1988 as Director of the Laboratory of Clinical Neuropharmacology, the head of a normal, volunteer research unit, and the executive director of research for Parkinson’s Disease ultimately leading to the approval for Sinemet CR for this condition.
In 2009, he was selected as an honorary senior visiting fellow by the University of Cambridge. He also directs psychopharmacology services and academic programs for the California Department of State Hospital System, where he also heads their assessment and treatment efforts to reduce violence.
