He was the referee at his 1997 FA Cup Final when Chelsea defeated Middlesbrough with a 2-0 score, the goals were scored by Roberto Di Matteo and Eddie Newton.

Since the year 2000, he has officiated in the annual series of national six-a-side tournaments called Masters Football, referees for which are FA endorsed. This competition features ex-professional footballers chosen by the PFA, and is televised on Sky TV.

He started his whistle at 19 yearsold, and was a part of the Barnsley & District Football League. He was on the FA Premier League list of referees since its beginning in 1992. His first appearance in the competition was for the match between Middlesbrough as well as Manchester City on 19 August 1992 at Ayresome Park. The result was an 2-0 win at home, with goals scored by Bernie Slaven.

While he was never selected to an FIFA World Cup competition or UEFA European Championships, he was in charge of Germany’s pre-tournament friendly game against Canada on the field in Toronto on June 8, 1994, just prior to being appointed to the World Cup of that year.
