Stephanie Hightower (born July 19 1958) is an American former hurdler, and former the president of USA Track & Field (USATF). She has been 4 times U.S. Champion in 100-meter hurdles as well as five-time U.S. Indoor Champion at 60-meter hurdles. She also took home her first gold medal in 1980’s U.S. Olympic Trials, but was unable to participate at the Moscow Olympics because of the boycott. She was awarded silver in 1987 at the Pan American Games.

Twenty-eight years later, in his role as the President of USATF, Hightower was part of the executive committee created to resolve another controversial close race, in which Jeneba and Allyson Felix fought for the last qualifying spot at the 2012 Olympic Trials.

Hightower was named the president of USA Track & Field in December 2008. She resigned her position as chair of the USATF board in April of 2015 as well as being elected into the IAAF Council in August 2015 She was removed as the the president of USATF in December of 2016.

The girl was born in Louisville, Kentucky, Hightower was a track star in the collegiate level in the track and field at The Ohio State University. Between 1977 and the year 1980, she did not lose any race in the 60-meter sprint, 60-meter hurdles or 100-meter hurdles and was awarded Big Ten Conference, NCAA and National championships. The athlete was not able to participate during the 1984 Summer Olympics because of her participation in the US refusing to participate in the Olympics. However, she did receive one of the 461 Congressional Gold Medals specifically designed for athletes who were spurned. Hightower did not compete at during the 1984 Summer Olympics, finishing fourth in what appeared to be a four-way tie during the Olympic Trials. Kim Turner won the race in 13.12 seconds, followed by Benita Fitzgerald-Brown coming in second place, Pam Page in third and Hightower fourth, running 13.13 seconds perhaps the most competitive race for elite athletes in the history of sports. The picture of the finish was later used as instructions on the use of photo finish devices.

After retiring from competitive sport, Hightower has held various posts in the USATF and was the women’s team manager during the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. She is the current president and CEO for The Columbus Urban League. In addition, she been in the Columbus Cabinet of the Mayor to oversee Sports Development. 2011 was the year that Hightower had been discussed possible candidates for the USATF’s position of CEO until the board finally decided to go with Max Siegel.
