Stefano Bonaccini (born 1 January 1967) is a prominent Italian politician, and a part of the Democratic Party. He has been President of Emilia-Romagna since the 24th of November in 2014.

After attending the scientific lyceum Bonaccini began his political career in the 1980s, becoming an activist in the peace movement. Bonaccini was later a member of the Democratic Party of the Left (PDS) the heir to the Italian Communist Party. In 1990 the year he was elected municipal assessor for the municipality of Campogalianno in which he resided. In 1993, he was elected Provincial Secretary of the Left Youth (SG), the PDS youth-oriented wing of the party. In 1995, he was appointed secretary to Modena’s PDS in Modena. From 1999 until 2006, Modena was his city assessor of public works and cultural heritage,, and historic city center.

After the 2010 regional election, Bonaccini was elected regional councilor for the Democratic Party. During the legislature he became one of the closer advisor of incombent governor Vasco Errani. On 13 December 2013, he was appointed national coordinator for “Local Authorities” in the national secretariat of the PD, under the leadership of Matteo Renzi, who Bonaccini supported in the 2013 primary election.
