Stefan Wolle was born in Halle. His father was a staunch fan of the newly established ruling party. He went to school in Berlin and enrolled on an apprenticeship within the trade of books. After completing his military service the Berlin native was accepted into Humboldt University to study historical sciences. However, in 1972 , he was exiled from the university because due to being accused of “intellectual arrogance”. However, he was allowed to go back and continue his studies at Humboldt between 1973 until 1976. However, he was not an official part in the Socialist Unity Party (“Sozialistische Einheitspartei Germanys” SED) SED) however, and did not intend to do so. He was employed for the next 13 decades as an academic scholar associated with the Central Historical Institute and the Institute for General History at the (East) German Academy of Sciences.

Wolle earned the doctorate degree in 1984, for research about Vladimir The Great from Kievan Rus’, consciously chosen as an unideological subject which was then revised for publication in 1993 as a book. Wolle gained more attention as a result of the Peaceful Revolution which was followed by German unification, which was officially announced in October of 1990. In the second half of the 1980s, he had been in contact with groups of the underground opposition and, after the wall was smashed in November 1989 , he was able to be an Round Table expert witness on Stasi documents. Additionally, he was a part of the “Normannenstrasse Citizens Committee”. He was charged, along and Armin Mitter with the responsibility of preserving documents in the Stasi national center in Normannenstrasse in the event that it was the time when Stasi operation itself ended. Through a time of rapid shifts, the occupation January 1990 by citizens concerned (taking their cues of similar protests at Erfurt, Lepizig and Rostock) of the building that housed the archivesstopped greater destruction of evidence. In March of 1990 Wolle and Mitter who had access to the archives they published the version of the first Stasi report and directions. There were 200,000 copies printed in two days and by the end of July, 1990, 250,000 were printed. The issue regarding what would be the best use of the Stasi archives was becoming urgent fast due to the nature and extent of surveillance by the government on citizens of East Germany between 1949 and 1989. By March 1990, an organized method of handling the archive started to be developed. Stefan Wolle served as a part of the group that became known as the Stasi Records Agency (“Bundesbeauftragter for the Stasi- Unterlagen” / BStU”Gauck commission “Gauck commission”) between March 1990 until February 1991.

Since 2005 Stefan Wolle has been director of academic research at the popular DDR Museum, which opened to the public in July 2006.
