Stefan Ramniceanu is one of the most popular and richest Painter who was born on August 15, 1954 in Ploiesti, Romania. The artist graduated from 1979 at his studies at the Nicolae Grigorescu Fine Arts Faculty in the University of Bucharest. In 1985, he began exhibits his work in two galleries in Bucharest: Atelier 35 and Galeria Orizont. Art historian and critic Radu Bogdan as well as philosopher and writer Nicolae Steinhardt both praised his work for his ability to reimagine light in art as the definition of “light from the inside”, i.e., a light emanating from the art form itself which makes it more light and elevates it to a higher state of consciousness. The excitement generated by the artist’s revealing to the public was evident in an important piece titled “Stefan Ramniceanu, artistic path” in which art historian and critic Razvan Theodorescu remarked that Ramniceanu’s work was a surprise to him, giving him “the feeling of a new future for contemporary art” in Romania.
Through the many years, Ramniceanu has distinguished himself as one of the iconic artist from the Romanian diaspora living in Paris and around the world, as evidenced in the way he is featured in numerous Romanian television programs. in 1994, the opening for its most important exhibition “The Shirts of the Wall” which was held in the Romanian Cultural Institute of Paris is broadcast by Romanian television. In the next year, he was interviewed with Mihaela Cristea in the course of her report on Romanian successful stories in France and also sat in to Monica Zvirjinski in her “top personalities” show. In 2004, he appeared on a show with Vlad Nistor on Realitatea TV. The following year, Romanian television channel dedicated to him to a one-hour live show on his biography where the artist talked about his work process, his art and his move to the Paris art world.
In 2014 a large-scale retrospective of his oeuvre is to be held at the Cultural Center of the Mogoşoaia Palace in Bucharest.
After the exhibition, Ramniceanu’s artwork gained the attention in his “free world” diplomatical circles and opened the door to exhibits that were not part of those of the Communist world. This is the way his solo show Ferecatura was showcased in Athens at the request by the Greek Ministry of Culture in Greece the following year, in 1989. The exhibit, which was held within the Rizarios Theological Institute under the title “Report to Byzantium”, made Ramniceanu one of only Romanian artists who were able to reach the Western world under The regime of Nicolae Ceausescu’s Romania. The initiative was widely covered by the Greek media, and it was also the reason that City of Athens received as an honorary tribute to the work of Ramniceanu’s “Byzantine Bell” – one of the most iconic sculptures in the exhibition which is currently on display at Vassilissis Sofias Avenue as part of the the public collection of art.

A few years after that, in 1988, when his work began to be displayed internationally, specifically the countries of Bulgaria, Hungary, and Austria where he was a representative of Romania in the Expositia de Arta Plastica Romaneasca The artist held his solo show “Ferecatura” in the Curtea Veche palace, which is the oldest palace in Bucharest and a voivodal home in around 14th century. Razvan Theodorescu, who was to be the the Minister for Culture and Religious Affairs some years later was the curator of the exhibition that would become a significant moment in the capital’s culture life. The exhibition was created to mark three centuries since the time of the accession of the most prominent Romanian historical character Constantin Brancoveanu, who was the Prince of Wallachia The exhibition redefined the images of Orthodox church through modern abstractions of “icons”, turning art into a symbol of protest against an oppressive Ceausescu regime at the time. Ferecatura was a major draw for Ramniceanu and Romanian television broadcast devoted him to the time of a 45-minute documentary entitled “the sense of grandeur, the cult of the effort and the joy of the offensive in Stefan Ramniceanu’s art work” named for the striking expression employed in the work of Andrei Plesu (Romanian Minister of Culture from 1989 until 2001 and Foreign Minister from 1997 until 1997) in his essay titled “The Crusade of Stefan Ramniceanu”.
After taking part of the Romanian Revolution in December 1989 Ramniceanu was subsequently invited from the French government, to open an art studio Paris in the year 1991. As a first member in his French administration, then he was made an official of the Cite internationale des arts in 1992 and was given the French citizenship in the following year. “I paint neither with tubes of paint nor with paintbrushes, I paint with the memory of things” Ramniceanu has recently spoken about his work. His work is widely displayed in Paris and all over the world since the early 1990s at galleries like Bernanos, Sandoz-Cite internationale des Art, Louis, FH Art Forum and Visio Dell’Arte in Paris, Jardin de Lumiere in Belgium, HS Kunst in Germany, Uni-Terre in Geneva, as well as in numerous art fairs for contemporary art in Paris and in Istanbul and in Dubai.
Dan Hăulică described Ramniceanu’s creative ambition in his critical essay entitled “Byzantium after Pollock” inspired to him by Ramniceanu’s 2001 solo exhibition “Gaze at the Golden Nights” held in the Paris premises of F.H. Art Forum Gallery: “A Byzantium which has gone through the radical exclamation of blacks by Soulages or Kline, and by Pollock’s vibratory expansion.” Ramniceanu’s art cannot be simply categorized in any particular style, nor does it subscribe to a single artistic tradition. However Ramniceanu derives inspiration from a variety of sources, including the detail and refinement of Romanian embroideries, and the imagery of Orthodox artworks. The language of material plays an essential role in the work of Stefan Ramniceanu, most of whose pictures have a three-dimensional structure. For the past forty years, his work has been developing in a process of accumulation, mingling and reworking of themes, motifs and symbols which recur and overlap repeatedly in diverse media. Highly symbolic connections emerge from metal, concrete, wire and other heterogeneous materials. Numerous pastose layers of muted colors lend the surface of his paintings a relief-like structure and thus an almost sculptural plasticity. The artist has borrowed indeed vocabulary from the specifics of painting crossing the disciplines of photography, sculpture, where he now focuses his efforts. When provocation has been erected as a system in contemporary art, Ramniceanu’s artistic position is to constantly question and expand the classical notion of sensibility. The artist defines this search as an accompaniment towards the figure of the “universal human”, a new abstracted understanding of the figure.
