Stanislas Dehaene is one of the most popular and richest Neuroscientist who was born on May 12, 1965 in Roubaix, Hauts-de- France, France. Stanislas Dehaene (born on May 12th 1965) is a French writer and cognitive neuroscientist. His research involves a range of subjects that include computational cognition and the neuronal foundation of reading and the neuronal connections between consciousness and reading. In 2017, he’s an associate professor in the College de France and, since 1989 is Director of INSERM Unit 562, “Cognitive Neuroimaging”.
Dehaene is most well-known for his research on numerical cognition, a field which he created and popularized by publishing his book in 1997, The Number Sense (La Bosse of Mathematics) that was awarded the Prix Jean-Rostand [fr] for the best French general-audience book in the field of language. He began his research into numerical cognition in collaboration with Jacques Mehler, examining the frequency of numbers in the cross-linguistic and whether they were interpreted in a compositional or an analog way, and also the relation between space and numbers (the “SNARC effect”). With Changeux the researcher then devised an algorithmic model of computational abilities that predicted log-gaussian tuning functions of numbers neurons, a conclusion that has been convincingly verified by single-unit neurophysiology
Dehaene then returned to France, where he began his own research group, which today numbers nearly 30 graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and researchers. In 2005, he was elected to the newly created Chair of Experimental Psychology at the Collège de France.
After completing his doctorate Dehaene became a researcher at INSERM within the Cognitive Sciences and Psycholinguistics Laboratory (Laboratoire of Sciences Cognitives and Psycholinguistique) headed by Mehler. He also worked for two years, between 1992 and 1994 as a postdoctoral researcher in the Institute of Cognitive and Decision Sciences together alongside Michael Posner at the University of Oregon.

He earned his master’s degree in applied math as well as computer science, in the year 1985 at the University of Paris VI. He began studying the field of psychology and neuroscience after reading the book by Jean-Pierre Changeux, L’Homme neuronal (Neuronal Man the Biology of The Mind).
After reading about Changeux’s work, Dehaene started to work with Changeux on models of computational neuronal activity of human cognition. This included working memory and task-control and task control. These collaborations remain to this day. Dehaene was then able to complete the PhD on Experimental Psychology in 1989 with Jacques Mehler at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), Paris.
Dehaene was one of ten people to be awarded the James S. McDonnell Foundation Centennial Fellowship in 1999 for his work on the “Cognitive Neuroscience of Numeracy”. In 2003, together with Denis Le Bihan, Dehaene was awarded the Grand Prix scientifique de la Fondation Louis D. from the Institut de France. In 2014, together with Giacomo Rizzolatti and Trevor Robbins, he was awarded the Brain Prize.
