Sprent Dabwido is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on September 16, 1972 in Yaren District, Nauru. Sprent Arumogo Dabbwido (16 September 1972 8 May 2019,) was a Nauruan politician who was the president of Nauru between the years 2011 and 2013, and is also an athlete. A son of a politician, Dabwido was originally elected to the Meneng Constituency in the Parliament of Nauru in the 2004 elections. He was Minister of Telecommunications in the administration of Marcus Stephen in 2009. Dabwido became a part of the Nauruan opposition in November of 2011, following Stephen’s resignation and, after he passed motions of no confidence in the interim presidency Freddie Pitcher, was elected president within four days of his election. As the president Dabwido served as the cabinet’s chairman in Nauru as well as held several roles within Nauru’s Nauruan government.
He supported the re-opening of the Australian-tax-payer-funded asylum seeker processing centre in Nauru, which is supported by the opposition Liberal Party of Australia but opposed by the governing Australian Labor Party. Then, in June of 2012 Dabwido dismissed his cabinet following just seven months of the office. He cited difficulties in the passage of his Constitutional Amendment Parliamentary Amendments Bill which is a constitutional reform bill which would alter the number of parliamentarians in parliament, create the Ombudsman Commission, and introduce the code of ethics for parliamentarians. In his new cabinet, Dabwido held the additional posts that included Minister for Public Service, Minister for Police & Emergency Services, Minister for Home Affairs, and Minister for Climate Change. In the name of Nauru, Dabwido made his first speech at the United Nations General Assembly during the general discussion of the sixty-seventh session on September 2012. In his address in which he called on the UN to tackle climate change in a more direct manner and also criticised that multilateralism is not effective.
After his presidency, Dabwido returned to the parliament and became part of the opposition and alleged the Nauru government of corruption and abuse of power while the government has accused him and other opposition parliamentarians of spreading “lies about the country” as a response with speaking with journalists based outside Nauru. In 2015, Dabwido and others held anti-government protests in front of the parliament and they were charged with rioting. The accused including Dabwido became involved in a court case known as “Nauru 19” and Dabwido was cleared of any wrongdoing in 2018 by the Supreme Court of Nauru.
In May 2018, Dabwido was diagnosed with terminal cancer at the Republic of Nauru Hospital. Dabwido left for Australia to undergo treatment for his condition and also seek political asylum, claiming that the Nauru government was preventing him from leaving Nauru for treatment overseas. The Nauru government has denied the claim, saying Dabwido was immediately accepted for fully funded overseas treatment for his condition.
Dabwido’s inaugural international gathering as president took place at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Durban, South Africa, as a delegate of his country’s Pacific Islands grouping of Small Island Developing States (SIDS). In his address to the plenary’s first session of the conference, he discussed the potential challenges facing islanders in the Pacific Ocean resulting from rising sea levels. In his speech, he reiterated the SIDS goal of reducing the amount in greenhouse gases emissions to stop the further development of global climate changes, Dabwido called for the establishment legal binding agreement along with Kyoto Protocol. Kyoto Protocol, with reference to “mitigation actions for developing countries” as well as in reference to the Bali Action Plan.

Prior to his political career, Dabwido was a weightlifter. He was the champion national in Nauru in weightlifting between the years 1995 and 1996. In addition, he represented Nauru internationally and won the Silver medal representing his nation during the 1995 Samoa Games and competed at the 1995 World Weightlifting Championships in the super heavyweight category.
The son of former Parliamentarian Audi Dabwido, Dabwido worked in the public sector before getting into politics. He was a founder part of Naoero Amo, the Naoero Amo party, and was elected to the Parliament of Nauru during the 2004 elections in which he defeated Nimrod Botelanga in his seat in Meneng. After being reelected at the 2007 elections in 2008 and 2007 Dabwido was elected a member of the faction in the parliament that backed the president Marcus Stephen, and was named Minister for Telecommunications under Stephen’s administration in 2009 when he was in charge of an introduction of cellphones in Nauru. He was re-elected again in the elections of 2010, Dabwido joined the opposition group in November of 2011 when Stephen was forced to step down as president, to be replaced by Freddie Pitcher.
Dabwido did not stand for re-election, and was replaced by Baron Waqa after the 2013 parliamentary elections.
