On April 14, 2014 she broke world records in tandem sprint and 1km time trial. She was piloted by James.
Thornhill was chosen for the English team in 2013 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland Para-cycling was featured in the very first event. at age 18 she was the team’s newest track cycling participant. While James was competing on behalf of in the Welsh squad, Thornhill was back as Scott to serve as her driver, and she competed for the team sprint as well as the 1 km time trial. They won gold during the race, beating Australian Paralympic champion Felicity Johnson and her pilot Holly Takos 2-0 in the semi-finals, and beating the Scottish team Aileen McGlynn as well as Louise Haston 2-0 in the final. They also set the Commonwealth record in qualifying with a time of 11.277 seconds. They also took gold in the 1km time trial in 1:08.187 that is which is a Commonwealth Games record. They defeated silver medalists McGlynn as well as Haston in excess of 1.5 seconds. Thornhill began her racing career as an adult the month of May 2013, at the age of 17. She races as a Stoker in the rear of a tandem while the front seat is occupied by a pilot who has normal vision. Her pilot was initially English cycling champion Helen Scott, with whom she was the winner of three British races. In September 2013 , she switched to Welsh athlete Rachel James as her pilot. Her first international appearance was along with James in December, during the International Paracycling Cup in Newport, Wales, where the pair took home two gold medals. Their time of 1:09.446 for the 1 km time trial was a bit off the record of the world by 0.73 seconds.
Thornhill is from Poynton close to Stockport within Cheshire. She was a student at Poynton High School, also with cyclist Sarah Storey. Her first major international competition was the UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships in Aguascalientes, Mexico, in April 2014. Thornhill and James won the gold medal in the tandem 1 km time trial; their time of 1:05.912 broke the world record by a little under 3 seconds. The pair won gold in the sprint, beating the New Zealand pair Emma Foy and Laura Fairweather 2–0 in the semi- final, and the Australian pair Brandie O’Connor and Breanna Hargrave 2–0 in the final. They also broke the world record in the qualifying round of the sprint with a flying start time over 200 metres of 10.854 seconds.
