Their father Manohar Kulkarni retired as an Army doctor who was employed at the Army Medical Center during over 30 years. Savinder, her mother Savinder Savinder, is a Punjabi who was employed by COD in Dehu Road, Pune. She was educated at the Army School, Kendriya Vidyalaya 1 and completed her graduation of mass communications and journalistic at Fergusson College, Pune. Additionally, she holds an post-graduation diploma in mass communication from the Indira school of communication. Sonalee has one younger brother who owns an event company named Fledgers.

First time Sonalee experienced a motion picture camera was at FTII, Pune, while playing a small part in the docu-drama. Then, she was offered the role as Katthak Dancer in the Marathi daily soap called Ha Khel Sanchitacha, alongside the veteran Marathi actor Vikram Gokhle. On the set of this show on TV she was given her first Marathi movie, Gadhavach Lagn, in which she made a cameo appearance as a dancing number titled Indra Darbari, Nache Sundari. Then she was offered a leading part for Kedar Shinde’s Bakula Namdev Ghotale. This was her first film as an actress in the lead role. She was awarded the award for Best Actress in Bakula Namdev Ghotale at Zee Gaurav 2008 as well as Best Actress in her debut film at the 45th Maharashtra state awards for a Marathi film 2008. In the following years, she was featured in films like Hay kay Nay Kay, Aaba Zindabad Chal Gaja Karu Maja, Chal Gammat Karu, Gosht Lagnanatrchi. However, these films did not get much attention in the box office.
In the years following Natrang, Sonalee was seen in the critically-acclaimed film Ajintha and another multi-star film Kshanbhar Vishranti, which featured Bharat Jadhav Hemant Dhome Sachit Patil, and Manva Naik. Her next film included Kedar Shinde’s Irada Pakka where she played the role of Aadya alongside Siddharth Jhadhav. Sonalee was next seen as a character in the dramatic film S Sasucha with Sunil Barve. The year 2010 ended with another film, Samudra in which she starred alongside the veteran Marathi actress Mohan Agashe.
She is noted for her lavani dance song, “Apsara Aali” in the Marathi film Natarang, followed by Kshanbhar Vishranti, Ajintha, and Zapatlela 2. In 2014, she was seen alongside Swapnil Joshi and Prarthana Behere in Mitwaa for which she was nominated at Zee Gaurav in the category of Best Actress. She made her Hindi film debut in the adult sex comedy Grand Masti wherein she played the role of Mamta, wife of Ritesh Deshmukh’s character. Kulkarni also made a cameo appearance in the Ajay Devgan picture Singham 2.
