After his professional playing profession, Watts became a physical education teacher at Dearborn Park elementary school and as a Basketball coach for Franklin High School in the Seattle area . He then began playing tennis. The year 2001 was the first time Watts endured 22 consecutive days at a hospitalized for the disease sarcoidosis. It led to his weight dropping by 50 pounds, before his improvement. He had to end his post-basketball profession as a teacher of physical education for over twenty years in Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School in Seattle before retiring in 2017.
The year was 1976 and Watts was also awarded in 1976 the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award for his outstanding contribution to the community.

Watts was not picked by any team during the 1973 NBA draft, however the coach he worked with in Xavier University of Louisiana was the cousin to Bill Russell, who was the general manager and coach of the Seattle SuperSonics. Russell offered Watts the opportunity to play in a trial and then he signed with the SuperSonics as an unrestricted free agent. After being named to the roster in 1973 and 1974 as reserve player, Russell played more often during the next season, and was an active player for the season 1975-1976. The season he was leading the NBA in assists per game, total assists the number of assists per game, steals as well as steals per game and was selected for the NBA All-Defense First Team. It was his first time to be the top league player in steals and assists the same season.
Watts His career began to decline in the years following 1976 and he resigned from the league after just six seasons due to injuries. He played for 4 1/2 seasons with the Sonics as well as a half-season playing with the New Orleans Jazz, and one season with the Houston Rockets.
