He was born in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, New York. He was dubbed Skyzoo from his family in reference to the Skyy disco tune with the same name (his birth name in middle is Skyler). Skyzoo was moved to the Bedford-Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn when he was a teenager. Skyzoo grew up with hip hop artists like Big Daddy Kane, N.W.A Kid ‘n’ Play, EPMD, Eric B. & Rakim as well as A Tribe Called Quest, however his music videos for Chi-Ali’s ‘”Age isn’t Nothing More Than A Number” that led him to write lyrics and working on the business of music. He was only nine when he started. He was raised just one block away from the rapper Notorious B.I.G., and has frequently mentioned B.I.G. ‘s popularity as a factor in his work. He also credits Jay-Z as a significant source of influence, and lists his top emcees as Jay-Z along with Mos Def. In Skyzoo’s teen years, his father relocated from South Jamaica, Queens, and Skyzoo was able to spend a good portion of his time in Queens and also in Brooklyn. Skyzoo frequently refers to the two boroughs in his music and has two brothers. Instead of attending school in his area as he grew older Skyzoo’s parents put in a high school in Manhattan to study advanced classes. Skyzoo also went to college, but didn’t complete the course for example, at SUNY Farmingdale in Long Island. The year 2006 was the first time he became employed by Morgan Stanley at the age of 23. But, he was dismissed because he returned to work late. This caused his to begin pursuing a musician career full-time.

To help promote the album, Skyzoo along with Director Mills Miller filmed a webisode series titled Saving Our Grace. The documentary-length shorts were shot across New York City and showed six characters, including a single mom and an aspiring drug dealer, each one representing the different emotions that are featured throughout the album. The series was released in Skyzoo’s YouTube site in august of 2009. In total, five music videos were made available in The Salvation, starting with “The Necessary Evils” which was released in May of 2008. The film was directed by Tee Smif from Production company KCCC and depicts a teenager drug addict trying to alter his lifestyle and the highs and lows that he has to face. On July 30, 2009, the music video of “The Beautiful Decay”, created by 9th Wonder and directed by Artemus Jenkins The video was released. After an album’s release, a music video for the track “Popularity” was made and was released on the 18th of November 2009. The video, which was directed by Todd Angkasuwan is an in-joke about the popular drama for high school called Saved by the Bell. Restless Films director Court Dunn produced on the music video of the single “Easy to Fly. It was released on the 15th of March 2010 the video is a tribute to the movie “Love Jones”. Skyzoo appears as Darius Lovehall with model Ashlee Ray in the role of Nina Mosley. On the 21st of April in 2010, Skyzoo unveiled an official video for “My Interpretation”, the last single from the album. The video was produced by Artemus Jenkins.

Released on October 5, 2010, Skyzoo’s collaborative EP with Illmind titled Live from the Tape Deck was a free-form showcase of his lyricism. Unlike Skyzoo’s debut album The Salvation, there largely aren’t deeply personal themes in Live from the Tape Deck. The album is a collection of “raw” hip hop with a cohesive backdrop. With this project, the two artists planned to bring what hip hop veterans such as Eric B. & Rakim, Gang Starr, EPMD, N.W.A and A Tribe Called Quest brought by having one producer with one sound and one theme. With the album, Skyzoo stated that his goal was “to make something that felt like a 2010 cassette tape. I wanted the content to be raw and lyric driven as always, but not as story driven or emotional as The Salvation was. There are still parts of the album that are stories and concepts, but not as much as my debut had. This one was more of a beats and rhymes type of album.” It was rated ‘XL’ (4/5) by XXL Magazine, and received an ‘XXL’ (5/5) rating in the ‘lyrics’ category of the review.
