Lee’s first novel, Disappearing Moon Cafe, released in 1990, focuses on the Wong family through four generations in the run-up to their titled cafe. Nominated for both the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize and the Governor General’s Award, the novel was awarded the City of Vancouver Book Award despite critics who claimed the story was over-priced. For instance the reviewer Gary Draper wrote, “Hardly a noun walks free of a trail of adjectives.” The critic John Z. Ming Chen has studied Lee’s works extensively from the Daoist standpoint in The Impact of Daoism upon Asian-Canadian Writers (Mellen, 2008). Disappearing Moon Cafe is republished on the 17th of January 2017 NeWest Press with an afterword written by Chris Lee and an interview with the author conducted by Smaro Kamboureli. Chris Lee comments: “SKY Lee’s novel was a major intervention in contemporary Canadian literature, a bold attempt to account for the role of Chinese migrants in settler colonialism, a feminist interrogation of diaspora, family, and kinship, as well as a gesture towards queer futures.”
Critical Studies: Dr. John Z. Ming Chen’s monograph, The Influence of Daoism on Asian-Canadian Writers (2008), features an entire chapter on SKY Lee’s two book-length works of fiction published so far.
Lee was published first as the illustrator for 1983’s children’s novel, Teach Me to Fly, Skyfighter! Written by Paul Yee. The book contains four stories that explore the experiences of having growing up as an Asian-Canadian living in a society with ties to both the Anglo-Canadian as well as Asian-Canadian cultural traditions. The reviewer Robert W. Bruinsma argued that the publication is “modestly illustrated.”
