Her other roles include roles on Moses the Lawgiver, Scandal in the Family and Three Brothers. in 1992 Stefanelli was last seen in a film, Le amiche of the cuore (Close Friends) produced by her spouse Michele Placido.
Stefanelli had a marriage to director and actor Michele Placido, with whom she appeared in a variety of films such as the 1975 erotica drama Peccati in the famiglia. They had three children which included actress Violante Placido. They separated in the year 1994. After the divorce Stefanelli along with her three children for a time resided in London.
Having quit her acting career in 1992, Stefanelli now owns and operates a fashion store in Rome called Simo Bloom, where she designs purses and shoes.
A hoax stating that Stefanelli had died appeared on the Internet in 2006, and then again in 2008.
The year 1973 was the first time she was photographed naked for the Italian version of Playboy however, she later resisted the opportunity to work in Hollywood to stay out of being typecast and forced to wear a t-shirt. Stefanelli stopped acting in the late 1970s following her wedding and the childbirth of their daughter Violante Placido in the year 1976. The actress returned in the beginning of the 1980s, to play Francesco Rosi’s Tre Fratelli (Three Brothers). The same year, she landed her breakout role in The Godfather as the innocent Apollonia Vitelli-Corleone, the beautiful but doomed first wife of Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) in the American crime film The Godfather, directed by Francis Ford Coppola. She was shown topless, although only 16 when the production began and 17 when the film came out. Her character was featured in the 1977 miniseries The Godfather: A Novel for Television.

When she started the car to drive towards him, she unknowingly ignited a bomb planted in the car, intended for Michael, the subsequent explosion killed her instantly. The attack was orchestrated by Michael’s trusted bodyguard, Fabrizio, who was paid off by the Barzini family from New York.
