Nabatov started playing piano at three, and his first compositions were composed at age six.
Nabatov was a student at Nabatov was a student at the Juilliard School from 1980 to 1984. In 1981, he accompanied avant-garde dancer Kazuo Ohno in performances in New York. In 1984 the journal Keyboard named him the Best Pianist. After graduation, “he played chamber music and accompanied choirs and former Soviet singing stars touring the growing circuit of Russian communities in the United States.” He was admitted as an American citizen in the year 1986. In 1986, he recorded an album with a trio, Circle the Line, featuring Bassist Ed Schuller and drummer Paul Motian. When he was often touring Europe as part of groups that were led by Ray Anderson, Arthur Blythe, Steve Lacy and Perry Robinson as well as with his band the NDR Hamburg radio big band. Nabatov also played in tours of Germany together with Matthias Schubert, “with the drummer Ernst Bier, and with a tap-dance group”. In 1989 Nabatov along with his German partner moved to Cologne.
Nabatov along with his family were allowed to depart their home country of the Soviet Union in 1979. The intention was to be a way for family members to come together in Israel however, the Nabatovs instead traveled to Italy and sought visas to be admitted to into the United States. While waiting for visas, Nabatov gained experience by becoming the pianist in residence in the Mississippi Jazz Club in Rome and was assisted and inspired with clarinettist Tony Scott. Nabatov’s family eventually made it to America. United States and settled in LeFrak City in Queens, New York City.

Simon Nabatov (born 11 January 1959) is a jazz Russian-American pianist.
He was a part of an Duke Ellington concert in Moscow in 1971. His determination to be a jazz musician was affirmed the following year at the Thad Jones-Mel-Lewis Orchestra performance. When he was 17 he was playing bebop along with others in Moscow. The formal music education he received took place through the Central School of Music and after that, at the Moscow Conservatory.
Nabatov has taught at several institutions, including the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen (1989–91), the International Jazz and Rock Academy in Remscheid (1991–93), and the Musikhochschule Luzern.
