Mayor has cited mandolinist and fiddler Dave Swarbrick as a teenage music influence after being instructed to sing Tonic sol-fa with his dad when he was young. With the release of his solo debut The Mandolin Album in 1990 He began a string of recordings with the goal to give the mandolin a distinctive British voice. The CD was released as a Recording of the Week on BBC Radio 2. His mixture of classic and original music along with classical music was praised in BBC World Service (Recording of the Week), Q, Cosmopolitan, Living Tradition (Scotland) and Sing Out! (USA).
In 2011, Top That! Publishing released I’m A Parrot, and Gobble! Gobble! Gobble!, 2 illustrated for children rhymed stories based on lyrics of two songs by Mayor James and featuring drawings drawn by Hilary James.
In May 2000, he made it into The UK’s Classical Artist Top Ten with Mandolin Moods, a ‘best of’ album of his compositions as well as classical pieces recorded by Universal Records.

He is the leader of Britain’s first modern mandolin ensemble called the Mandolinquents. The quartet emerged from a 1997 line up, The Mandolin All- stars with multi-instrumentalists Maartin Allcock and Chris Leslie of Fairport Convention, and longtime musical partner, Hilary James. The Mandolinquents now includes the classical guitarist Gerald Garcia, multi-instrumentalist Richard Collins and Hilary James on mandobass and vocals.
Alongside their other sites, they also launched Childrensmusic.co.uk in 1999.
