Ethics-Politics-Subjectivity: Essays on Derrida, Levinas, & Contemporary French Thought (Verso, 1999)
Since its first appearance in 1992 The Ethics of Deconstruction has received acclaim for its work. In contrast to the accepted conception of Derrida as a metaphysician , with his own “infrastructure” or as a nihilist with no value, Critchley argues that central to his thought is an ethical conception of experience. In particular, this concept of ethical experience has to be understood in terms of Levinas where the other concept calls to question the self-consciousness, ego and the normal comprehension. Critchley believes that this Levinasian view of ethics informs Derrida’s theory of deconstruction and explains the concept of clotural understanding.
