Simon Crafar is one of the most popular and richest Motorcycle Racer who was born on January 15, 1969 in Waiouru, Manawatu-Wanganui, New Zealand. Simon Crafar (born 15 January 1969 in Waiouru) is a former Grand Prix and WSBK motorcycle road racer from New Zealand.
He was back in World Superbike for 2000 as substitute to Aaron Slight for two rounds. In 2002, he raced on British Superbike for the Virgin Mobile Yamaha team, finishing 8th overall, with two third place results. He resigned from motorbike racing at the close of the 2002 season in order to enjoy more quality time with his family and wife and is still living in Andorra until today.
Following his retirement from road racing, Crafar continued to enjoy Extreme Enduro competing in the Red Bull Romaniacs competition held in Romania winning the Expert Class during 2007. During 2008 and 2009 Crafar worked with the organisers of the Red Bull Romaniacs competition assisting in the design and mapping of the course sections. During 2009 he was involved in a serious accident with a car whilst planning for the 2009 event that resulted in a broken back. Crafar underwent a successful operation to insert a metal plate and screws into his back.
During the latter part of 2011 Simon Crafar launched Motovudu – Dark Art of Performance, a book and DVD series that is an instructional guide to riding faster on-circuit. Filmed at the MotoGP circuit Motorland Aragon in Northern Spain by Banter Media and directed by Liam Andrew Wright, both the book and the film draw from Crafar’s previous experiences, both racing and instructional and is designed to teach any rider how they can ride fast and stay away from unnecessary risks.
The year 1998 was the time Crafar was a driver of in a WCM Yamaha YZR500 in the 500cc world championship finishing second in the British Grand Prix at Donington Park (the only victory for Dunlop in an open race and the sole non Honda victory in the 1998 season, and also on Donington Park in 6 years) and placing 7th in the standings with two podium finishes with a 2nd and a 3rd throughout the season, with the fastest race laps at two locations at Donington Park and Phillip Island. He was with the team throughout the first half of 1999, earning points on five occasions. The WCM team switched from Michelin to Michelin between seasons, and Crafar discovered he was unable to achieve his previous performance like he had in earlier in the year with Dunlop tyres. They quit at the midpoint of in the season of 1999. Crafar also finished 10th in an individual race in the MuZ in Donington Park during the same year. In all, he’s competed in 25 500cc races as well as 7 250cc races. He also took three podium positions.

His racing career began in 1981 with the Suzuki TM75 at a locally-based Junior Motocross Championship before eventually shifting to the road in 1985. He was the winner of the Malaysian Superbike Championship in the year 1991. In 1993, he competed on in a Harris motorcycle in the 500cc World Championship before joining the Suzuki factory racing team in the 250 class in the last period of the year. He didn’t like the experience, believing that he was too big to fit on the bike.
In 1994, he teamed up with fellow the countryman Aaron Slight on a semi-works Rumi Honda RC45 in the Superbike World Championship. After finishing fifth overall during 1994 Simon started his race season of 1995 on Rumi Honda, and later replaced Doug Polen as the second factory rider along with Aaron Slight, although they competed under various liveries. The bike was gradually becoming more competitive and Simon was a force in the later portion of 1995, coming second in the race one at Assen. Simon then spent two years as a member of Kawasaki Racing. Kawasaki racing team, achieving just one podium during the 1996 season. He finished 7th. In 1997, he scored two 2nds and five 3rd spots as well as a Pole place and fastest lap. He went on to place 5th overall. In all, he got 10 podiums including four 2nds and 6 3rds. However none of them won in the race.
Since 2006 Crafar has been involved in on-circuit rider instruction for both track day riders and professional racers and has personally taught over 600 people on a one-to-one basis in a little over six years. Utilising his experience from competing and racing in World Championships throughout a 13 year career, Crafar uses simple, logical techniques that are very effective in allowing riders to improve their lap times in a safe and controlled manner. It was this approach to instruction that lead the organisers of the European Junior Cup a race series held at the WSBK championship rounds across Europe for 14- to 19-year-old riders) to approach Crafar to become the mentor and series instructor to the young racers aged 14–19 for the 2011 Championship, a position he held for the 2012 Championship. Crafar is involved in one-to-one rider instruction throughout Europe.
