He made his mark in the junior players in the youth league of Helsingborg Basket in his native Sweden before making his debut in Sweden’s second-tier league Basketettan in the first few weeks during the league’s 2015-16 campaign. He was a formidable presence in the interior, particularly stopping shots (5.8bpg) in Basketettan game, and playing an average of 11.7 per game and 13.5 rebound per game (12 games).
In April 2017 Birgander entered his name in the 17th NBA Draft. A few months later He was among the only 10 international players to be selected for the NBA Draft that year. He was, however, not drafted. He joined Joventut de Badalona of the Spanish top division Liga ACB in July 2017.
