In 2005, together with business with his partner then Sergey Generalov, he purchased one of the biggest mining corporations in Georgia comprised of the Madneuli mine as well as it’s subsidiary Quartzite. It was to be one of the initial production assets for GeoProMining. The two split those assets belonging to their common venture called Industrial Investors, with Povarenkin becoming the majority shareholder in GeoProMining. Povarenkin later increased the size of GPM further by purchasing various investments within Russia as well as the Caucasus. In 2012, the firm was able to sell its holdings in Georgia.
Povarenkin has more than 15 years of management experience in both the industrial and banking sectors. Previously he was Chairman of the Board of Industrial Investors Group, FESCO, Russian Industrial Bank and First Vice President, Head of Investment Management Business at Incombank. He was director of Far Eastern Shipping Company Plc from June 5, 2007 until December 2008. He is a Non-Executive Director at Saddleback Corporation Ltd.
In September 2011, he joined the Business Council of the Russian Ambassador to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The Council strives to strengthen bilateral economic and investment cooperation between the two countries.
