After having gained experience as a prosecutor and judge throughout Italy, Arbia made her international debut as a Senior Trial Attorney in the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.
When she was a lawyer at the time in Venice, Arbia passed a open competitive exam to become a prosecutor and judge in Italy in positions she had until her retirement in 1999. As well as other duties she was a member of one of the chambers for criminal proceedings at the Appeals Court.
On the 24th of October, 1999 Arbia was named Senior Trial Lawyer and later Acting Chief of Prosecutions at the office of the prosecutor at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and then Chief of Prosecutions. Arbia earned her master’s in law at The University of Padua in Italy in 1976. During her time she was working, completed her education in order to become a specialist on European legal issues (at the Academy of European Law in Florence) and international law (at The Hague Academy of International Law). She completed additional training in the Rene Cassin International Institute of Human Rights in 1989, and in the Canadian Human Rights Foundation in 1995.
Arbia was a participant in the writing of Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court as an official member of the Italian delegation to the conference of diplomats held in Rome in 1998.
Her election as Registrar of the International Criminal Court on 28 February 2008 was a logical progression from her career at the ICTR. As Registrar, Arbia is responsible for the non-judicial aspects of the administration and servicing of the Court.
