Silme Domingo is one of the most popular and richest Labor Activist who was born on January 25, 1952 in Killeen, Texas, United States. Silme Domingo was born Killeen, Texas, on January 25, 1952 , as one of five sons from Nemesio as well as Adelina Domingo. He was raised in Texas and then his family relocated to Seattle in the year 1960. Silme went to Ballard High School and graduated with distinction in his school, the University of Washington, where the student was an activist. He was involved in the fight in the 1970s to preserve the city’s International District, and in 1974, he joined in 1974 the Union of Democratic Filipinos (tagalog: Katipunan ng mga Demokratikong Pilipino, KDP) and created an official Seattle KDP chapter. This chapter was the first to organize a protest at the time in Seattle in protest against Ferdinand Marcos dictatorship. Domingo was co-founder of Alaska Cannery Workers Association, an organization of civil rights which pursued legal action against discriminatory practices at Alaska canneries, where Filipino American, Anglo American and indigenous workers were treated, paid and housed in different ways according to their race. Together with his co- organizer and fellow activist Gene Viernes, Domingo was elected as an officer in Seattle’s Cannery Workers and Farm Laborers Union Local 37 with an anti- corruption union democratic platform. Domingo is survived with two kids, Ligaya and Kalayaan.
In 1991, the former local 37 President Constantine “Tony” Baruso (1928-2008) was a fervent supporter to the Marcos regime was also indicted for aggravated first-degree murder in the murder of Viernes but not Domingo.
In 2011, the Inlandboatmen’s Union, Region 37, created an annual scholarship to honor the memory of Domingo and Viernes. The scholarship is available via the Harry Bridges Center for Labor Studies, University of Washington.
The murders were originally thought to be an isolated act of violence, but friends and family organized a Committee for Justice for Domingo and Viernes (CJDV) eventually found links between the murders to Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos and his wife Imelda, who had ordered the murders in retaliation for the victims’ anti-Marcos organizing. In 1989, and a federal jury agreed with the CJDV, finding Marcos guilty of the murders.
In 1982, an annual ceremony in association with the group LELO which stands for Legacy of Leadership, Equality and Organizing is held in Seattle to commemorate Silme Domingo, and Gene Viernes and an award is awarded to an organisation or an individual who exhibits the ideals and values of both.

Silme Domingo as well as Gene Viernes were officers and reformers in Local 37 of the International Longshoremen’s and Warehousemen’s Union (ILWU). They were elected on a platform of reform to be officers in ILWU Local 37 — to stop corruption and bribery inside the union. Domingo along with Viernes were both killed on July 1, 1981 in at the Local 37 offices in Pioneer Square in downtown Seattle. Viernes was killed in the same spot. Domingo who was who was shot four times in the abdomen, was able to fight to get back on the street. The hall of the union was just one block away from a fire station. Two firefighters arrived in a matter of minutes. Domingo was able to give them his names as the perpetrators, “Guloy and Ramil”.
Silme Domingo was a Filipino American labor activist. Along with Gene Viernes, he was killed in Seattle on the 1st of June 1981 as he tried to change the Local 37 of the International Longshoremen’s and Warehousemen’s Union (ILWU).
