Silke Urbanski (born 5 February 1964) is a historian, writer and ex-politician (SPD). She held for a number of years the position of a professor for Middle-age historians within the Historisches Seminar (loosely, “Historical faculty”) at the University of Hamburg, but she quit in 2005 as protest against the decision of the Hamburg Senate to introduce student tuition fees. (University fee for tuition was eliminated after a couple of years in Hamburg after an election of the government on a state-level.)
She mingled her teaching not only with a career in politics but also authorship. The biography she wrote about Geseke Cletzen, a wealthy lady whom (re-)endowed her hospital St. Elisabeth Hospital (as the Hospital zum Heiligen Geist in Hamburg was at first known) in the early fifteenth century was published in 1996. In the 21st century, she has written a variety of historical novels. She has also published extensive school-level teaching notes on various topics and , more recently, when the author was alive, she wrote two academic “Festschriften” honoring her former mentor Gerhard Theuerkauf.
Since 2014 Urbanski has been working with Rita Bake (and others) on the “Hamburg-Geschichtsbuch” (loosely, “Hamburg History Book”) project, a multi- channel project backed by the “League for Hamburg History” (“Verein für Hamburgische Geschichte”) and other institutions in the city involved with history and education. She has shaped and developed the project, which she says will never be complete, assembling a team of authors, and herself designing many of the “worksheets” issued as part of it. The project website went public on 6 September 2017. Practical support also comes from the university and other relevant research bodies.
She worked at Hamburg’s University of Hamburg between 1989 until 1997 (with an interruption in the years 1991/92) beginning as a researcher. She was later on as a teacher. Her doctorate was awarded in 1996 with a research on the turbulent history that took place at the St. Johannis Monastery in the northern area of the city’s centre. The dissertation was swiftly adapted to publish.

Silke Urbanski was born in Hamburg. She was able to finish her education in 1983, and then went to at the University of Hamburg where she was a student of Philosophy, History as well as Teaching Sciences. She spent a semester abroad in 1986/87 to teach at an institution in Richmond upon Thames on the south- western border of London, England, before returning to Hamburg in order to advance the academic path she had chosen to pursue. In 1986, she was a member of in the (German) Social Democratic Party.
Since joining to the SPD when she joined the SPD in 1986 from 1997 between 1997 and between 1997 and Urbanski was a Member of the Hamburg party’s “Arts and Culture Authority” (“Kulturbehorde. “). In the regional elections, she was elected to the Burgerschaft (Hamburg Parliament) in 1997. The SPD did, as is the norm in Hamburg during the time had the most significant share of votes, and was able to secure the highest number of seats, however they did not meet the threshold of 50% and were forced to govern together along with the Green Party. Silke Urbanski was appointed a member of her party on two major committees which included one was for “Gender equality” (“Gleichstellung of the Frau”) in addition to one in charge of “Arts and Culture” (“Kultur”). But she was in the parliament for only one term, which ended in 2001.
From 1997 Urbanski has worked as a teacher at the Max-Brauer-Schule (secondary school) in Altona (west Hamburg). She combined this with work as a lecturer at the universityHistory Faculty). In 2008 she switched to Hamburg’s Albert- Schweitzer-Gymnasium (secondary school).
