Swan was the son of the 1970s country and pop singer Billy Swan, who played the rhythm guitar with Kris Kristofferson. Swan was born in Los Angeles, California in April of 1978. Swan’s passion for music began when she was a young age. When she spent many evenings on stage with her father her guitar, she made the decision to be an accomplished musician. When she was a teenager, Sierra listened to Prince, Queen, Oingo Boingo, The Beatles, Grant Lee Buffalo, Mozart and Patsy Cline. In the end, it was Patsy Cline that influenced her career in singing. Swan also got inspiration from Tori Amos.

She has released numerous EPs and albums since 2006.

She completed the Queen Of The Valley LP, which was originally titled Queen of the Valley Girls. However, she was dropped from her label which delayed release until 2008. The LP featured such producers as Chad Hugo (of The Neptunes) and Linda Perry (formerly of the musical group 4 Non Blondes).

Her most recent solo work is the album Good Soldier, released on February 25, 2014 and produced by Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins.

After she quit with the Black Eyed Peas she went alone. Swan got noticed by Anne Previn and Scott Cutler of Ednaswap. She composed a number of songs in collaboration with Previn along with Cutler. The year 2001 was the first time she contracted by Atlantic Records.
