He completed his doctoral research in the University of Delaware under the supervision of Prof. Roberta F. Colman to earn a doctorate in 1981. His postdoctoral research was conducted in Brandeis University at the laboratory of Prof. Alfred Redfield (1981-82) as well as within the National Institutes of Health (1982-86). In return to India in 1986, he was a part of the Bose Institute, Kolkata as an Associate Lecturer within the Department of Biophysics. He was with the Institute until 2004 and held the position of Reader and Professor of Biophysics before he was transferred to the Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (IICB) as Director. After 10 years as Director of IICB the Institute, he returned to the Bose Institute in 2014 as the Senior Professor, and as the Dean for Studies. While at IICB, he has served the nation in several different high level capacities such as the Founder- Director-in-charge of the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, Kolkata (NIPER) (2007-14), the Cluster Director of 11 Biological institutes of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) (2009-14), member of the Governing Body of the CSIR and as a Visiting Professor at Osaka University (2012). He has also served as the president of the West Bengal Academy of Science and Technology. He is the Founder-President of the Chemical Biology Society of India. Roy was able to publish his through numerous articles that have been published in peer-reviewed publications. ResearchGate the online repository for scientific papers and research papers, has listed the 155 articles. Roy is the co-editor of Subcellular Biochemistry, volume on Proteins Structure, Function, and Engineering, published through Plenum Press, New York, USA. He has guided more than 30 students in their doctoral research. In 2013, when it was announced that the Chemical Biology Society of India was established 2013, he was its first president. He still holds the office. He was the vice president for the West Bengal Academy of Science and Technology and is the current vice president.
Roy’s work during his time in the US focused on the folding of proteins and the study of nuclear magnetic resonance of DNA. These studies discovered the first hydropathy model that helped in forecasting the interiors and exteriors of proteins by analysing sequence information. It is also claimed that he have completed the full analysis of nucleic acid imino proton spectrum employing Nuclear Overhauser effect, regio-specific isotope labeling of sugars within nucleic acids , and in collaboration in collaboration with Dr. A. Bax along with R. H. Griffey created an indirect detection technique for 2D-NMR that was reported first-of-its-kind. In the following years, focusing on Lambda bacteriophage, he studied the expression of genes in the bacterial virus by using it’s operator-repressor-system. In collaboration alongside Sankar Adhya in 1998, they uncovered the role of different contact in the mechanism of regulation of transcription and proved the theory in numerous genes and regulatory systems. His current research is focused on peptide-based therapeutics. He has patents on the majority of his work.
