Shoshana Johnson is one of the most popular and richest Soldier who was born on January 18, 1973 in Pedro Miguel, Azores, Portugal. Shoshana Nyree Johnson (born 18 January 1973) is a Panamanian born ex- United States soldier, and the first female black imprisoned in historical military of the United States. Johnson was a Specialist of the U.S. Army 507th Maintenance Company, 5/52 ADA BN, 11th ADA Brigade. In the Battle of Nasiriyah, she was wounded by bullets to both her ankles. She was also taken captive from Iraqi forces. She was imprisoned inside Iraq over the course of 22 days with five other members of her group. Her release was a result of an operation to rescue her by United States Marine Corps units on April 13, 2003.
On the 23rd of March 2003, just one month after her arrival in Iraq to be an element of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Johnson was part of a convoy which was attacked and captured inside the capital city of Nasiriyah. Iraqi soldiers ambushed the convoy’s supply when it made a wrong turn. There was a fierce battle about Nasiriyah the vital crossing point for the River Euphrates. Johnson was among the dozen soldiers from the convoy that were captured. Johnson was shot in the leg in her ankles.
In 2007 Dafina Books and Johnson parted ways. Johnson signed a deal with Simon & Schuster in 2008. I’m Still Standing: From Captive U.S. Soldier to Free Citizen — My Journey Home was released on February 2, 2010.
On the 13th of April of 2003, following house raids carried out by United States Marines of the 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division in the city of Samarra, Johnson was rescued together with another six prisoner of the war. They were greeted by the nation of heroes United States on April 16 by a raucous crowd of more than 3,000. It was the day that the U.S. Army recognized them for their courage, bravery and sacrifice with numerous distinctions.

Johnson is a second-generation U.S. Army veteran, is from Panama. Johnson emigrated from Panama to in the United States with her family when she was a kid. She is the eldest daughter from the retired Army Sergeant First Class Claude Johnson and wife Eunice. The year 1991 was the first time Johnson participated in the JROTC course for Andress High School. While she didn’t plan to pursue a career in the military however, she was keen to go to culinary school, and so Johnson joined the Army to save money to pay for tuition. United States. In New Year’s Eve in 2003, Johnson was asked to participate with New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg in initiating The Times Square New Year ball that was set to drop in 2004. Johnson has delivered talks across the country about her experiences as a war prisoner and has been rewarded with standing ovations by small groups of over 65,000 attendees at special events organized by both private and public institutions.
In February 2003, while serving her second military assignment at Fort Bliss, Texas, Johnson received orders to deploy to Iraq as a Quartermaster Corps Food Service Specialist (MOS 92G) with the 507th Maintenance Company, 5/52 ADA BN, 11th ADA Brigade. Shoshana enlisted with the duty of preparing meals. Her company’s duty was to supply mechanics to repair the Patriot missile trucks housed at the post.
