Shirley Thomas (born 15 June 1963) is an ex- British sprinter who participated mainly in the 100m and 4 x 100 meters relay. She was awarded an Olympic silver medal for the relay during the 1983 World Championships in Helsinki. She also took part in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Thomas was awarded Olympic selection in 1984. But, in the 100m at Los Angeles, she only achieved a time of 12.13 seconds in her heat because of injuries. Her accident also ended her chances of winning an Olympic relay medal as the British team going on to claim the bronze medal. Thomas’ replacement was Simmone Jacobs.
In the first World Championships in Helsinki in 1983, Thomas once again anchored Great Britain to a silver medal in the sprint relay. placing second to those of the East Germans but managing to keep a distance from the speedy finishing Jamaicans with the help of Merlene Ottey. Her time was 42.71 and 42.73. In the 100m she was able to run 11.48 to get to the semi-finals.
