AIA) (born on 4 February 1952) is a Canadian architect from Canada. She is the founder with KPMB Architects in Toronto, which is a Canadian practice. The year 2013 was the first time Blumberg has been named a member of the Order of Canada “for her contributions to architecture and for her commitment to creating spaces that foster a sense of community.” Some notable designs include her Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) Campus, 2011, which was awarded the Royal Institute of British Architects International Award (2012), the Architectural Record “Good Design is Good Business Award” (2013) and the Governor General’s Medal for Excellence (2014).

Blumberg is a part of the Toronto Community Housing Design Review Panel and has also been on the City of Toronto Design Review Panel. In 2014, Blumberg was a member of the review committee for design of an memorial for the Victims of Communism. The memorial was proposed to be built at the few areas of land that is open located in the Parliamentary District in Canada’s capitalcity, Ottawa, Blumberg voted against the plan and led protests against the idea and the site.

Shirley was the one who sparked the fusion that was Shirley was the catalyst for the fusion of Design Exchange, an architectural clash that featured those of the late 1990s Ernst & Young Tower, 1930s Moderne machine-like style and an early 60s Mies Van der Rohe’s Toronto-Dominion Centre next door. Shirley was the partner in charge of this $8 million construction project for Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg, the architectural firm that was awarded the project in January 1988, following beating out 40 other design firms in an interview. Attention to detail and the thought process throughout this project Design Exchange allowed her to combine these different architectural styles into one distinctive design. In addition to using a range different materials Shirley utilized them in elegant ways, explaining that “we wanted to demonstrate their limits, to see how far we could push them.” In this particular project, she saysthat “design isn’t just people sitting around and sketching on a drawing board. It’s a huge industry with many collaborators, from designers to fabricators to suppliers.”

Blumberg was raised in Cape Town, South Africa she graduated from Cape Town’s University of Cape Town in 1972. She emigrated to Canada in protest of Apartheid in her country of birth in 1974 after having spent an entire time at London, England. She finished her studies in Canada and graduated with distinction in the University of Toronto School of Architecture in the year 1976.

In 1977 she joined Barton Myers Associates, Inc. in Toronto and worked for 10 year as an associate, until Myers decided to relocate the office of his company in Los Angeles. This led Blumberg to join with three of the employees who were part of Barton Myers – Bruce Kuwabara, Thomas Payne and Marianne McKenna to create Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects (KPMB) in 1987.

Her main criticism to the project was why a memorial to victims of communism was so prominent and so “centrally placed that it would seem to quite overshadow Canada’s true history,” as well as the memorial not being able to be built for the estimated price of $5.5 million.
