She continued her studies at Anuradhapura Central College where she completed her GCE Advanced Levels exam in 1976. She was then admitted to at the university of Colombo’s Faculty of Law, graduating in December of 1980 with an upper-second Bachelor of Laws honors degree. She earned the Master of Philosophy at Colombo’s University of Colombo in October 1983. In the same year , she received the Commonwealth Open Scholarship and the Chevening Scholarship in 1989. She was admitted as an attorney in September 1983. In March of 1986 she was awarded an PhD in law from the school of the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London as the first woman from Sri Lanka to obtain this degree in Law from a foreign institution. She also received the Fulbright-Hays Award in 1996, and in 1993 and 1994, the British Council Assert Award in 1993 and 1994.
An eleven-member select committee of the parliamentary parliament (PSC) comprising seven ruling party MPs , including Mr.Rajitha Senaratne and Mr. Anura Priyadarshana Yopa, Mr.Susil Premjayante and four opposition MPs was set up to investigate the impeachment accusations. Hearings on impeachment were held on the 23rd of November as well as on 4 December 2012 and 6 December 2012 , when Bandaranayake was absent from the hearing. The opposition MPs quit the PSC on December 7, 2012. The PSC’s report was submitted to the Parliament on December 8, 2012. The PSC determined that three of the five charges against Bandaranayake were proved and that was enough to expel herself from her position. She was found guilty of fraud during a property transaction (1st charge) as well as having no banks accounts (4th charge) as well as conflict between interests in relation to a court matter which involved her spouse (5th count). The judge found her guilty of the third and second charges. The other nine charges were not considered by the PSC because the charges above were sufficient to expel the woman from her position. Opposition MPs have resisted the PSC report in a statement that “This was not an inquiry it was an inquisition”. The report of the PSC will be delivered to the President Rajapaksa and then the parliament will be able to vote on the impeachment resolution in the coming year.
Due to an error on the part of the government, instead of an address of parliament to the president empowering him to remove the Chief Justice, Parliament on 11 January 2013, voted on a motion of impeachment, that sought to set up a Parliamentary Select Committee to investigate 14 charges that had been brought against her, the problem was, that motion had already been voted upon on 6 November 2012.
On 6 November 2013, 116 members of Parliament tabled a motion that sought to set up a Parliamentary Select Committee to investigate on 14 charges that had been brought against her. Accordingly, the PSC was set up and had several sittings. They concluded their inquiry, finding her guilty of 3 of the 14 charges and reported to the Speaker recommending the removal of Dr. Bandaranayake from the Office of the Chief Justice. The Parliament debated the findings on 9 and 10 January 2013 and decided to vote for the impeachment on 11 January 2013.
Bandaranayake was the acting chief justice for 11 times. In 2011, President Mahinda Rajapaksa appointed Bandaranayake as Chief Justice taking over from Asoka de Silva, who resigned on 17 May 2011. She took oaths before the President Rajapaksa on May 18th, 2011.

Bandaranayake was appointed as a guest lecturer in the Colombo University’s Faculty of Law in 1981. She held various positions in the department prior to being named Director of the Department of Law in 1987 and was also a member of the Judicial Service Commission of Sri Lanka. She was an interim Dean of the faculties many times prior to being named Dean in the year 1992. In 1993, she was promoted to the Associate Professor of law “on merit”. She was vice- chancellor several times.
Following her admission to Bar, Bandaranayake worked as an attorney-at-law for the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka. The controversial appointment by the Supreme Court on 30 October 1996 by President Chandrika Kumaratunga based on the recommendation of Mr. G. L. Peiris who was at the time Minister for Justice as well as Constitutional Affairs. The very first woman justice on the Supreme Court. Bandaranayake was not judge, and was not a lawyer. The appointment she received as a judge on the Supreme Court led to protests from judges and lawyers. She was soon the highest ranking Supreme Court Judge.
An impeachment motion against Bandaranayake signed by 117 UPFA MPs was handed to Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa on 1 November 2012. Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa revealed the 14 charges against Bandaranayake on 6 November 2012 which included failing to disclose financial interests, abuse of power and disregarding the constitution. Bandaranayake has denied the charges and refused to resign from her position.

Upatissa Atapattu Bandaranayake Wasala Mudiyanse Ralahamilage Shirani Anshumala Bandaranayake (known as Shirani Bandaranayake; born April 1958) served as the 43rd Chief Justice of Sri Lanka. Although a qualified lawyer, she has never practiced law. After university Bandaranayake entered academia, holding a number of senior positions at the University of Colombo, including Associate Professor of Law and the Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Colombo. She was first appointed to the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka in 1996, becoming Sri Lanka’s first female Supreme Court Judge. Bandaranayake was appointed chief justice in May 2011 following the mandatory retirement of Asoka de Silva. Bandaranayake was controversially impeached by Parliament and then removed from office by President Mahinda Rajapaksa in January 2013. and on 28 January 2015 the government of Sri Lanka, had removed all obstacles for Bandaranayake to hold her position as the 43rd Chief Justice by the President Maithripala Sirisena, on the ground that her 2013 impeachment was unlawful and as such the appointment of Mohan Peiris, her successor, was void Ab initio. This paved the way for Bandaranayake to resume duties on 28 January 2015. She retired from the position just after one day of her reappointment on 29 January 2015 claiming support for a free and fair Judiciary in Sri Lanka.
