Shin Sung-chul is one of the most popular and richest Physicist who was born on July 19, 1952 in Daejeon, South Korea. Shin Sung-chul (Korean: sinseongceol ; born on 19 July 1952) is a South Korean physicist and the 16th president of KAIST. Shin was the very first President of DGIST after it was changed in structure as a research institution into a university in. The main areas of research he pursues as a scientist include nanomagnetism and spintronics. In June 2014, Shin is the president-elect of DGIST university, Professor at the University of Ulsan, a member of the Presidential Advisory Council on Science & Technology (PACST), the chair of the Committee for Future Strategy, PACST and is a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS).
A renowned scholar on the subject of nanosciences Shin’s research is focused on the synthetic synthesis and analysis of magnetic substances, magnetisotropy as well as magneto-optical phenomenon. Particularly, he played a pivotal role in the field of research of nanospinics. He was the director in the beginning of the Center for Nanospinics of Spintronic Materials between 1998 and 2005 and then the Institute of Nanoscience and Technology from 2001 until 2003 within KAIST. He is currently the director of his own Laboratory for Nanospinics of Spintronic Materials at KAIST. He has published more than 300 research papers in journals, and holds 37 patents, has given 160 invited national and international lectures, as well as directed the supervision of more than MS, Ph.D., and postdoctoral researchers.
In addition to academic positions, Shin has held various administrative positions, made contributions in promoting science and technology and provided advice on science and technology policy to the government. He served as vice- dean of student affairs, director of International Cooperation Division, and dean of planning as well as vice president (2004–2005) in KAIST. He also served as a board member of Expo Science Park, a president of Daedeok Club (Opinion Leaders’ Club for Science and Technology in Daeduck Science Town) (2002–2008), emceed a science program broadcast by KBS, a major Korean television broadcasting network, provided advice on science policy to the government, including Ministry of Science and Technology and Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning. Shin was appointed as a member of PACST (Presidential Advisory Council on Science & Technology). The role of PACST is to provide advice and consultations to the president of South Korea on issues related to science and technology. Shin also served as the chair of Committee for Future Strategy, PACST. He has served on the board of the Agency for Defense Development since 2014. He also has been serving as a board member of the Center for the 4IR Global Network Advisory at the World Economic Forum since 2018.
Professor Sung-Chul Shin is the 16th president of KAIST. President Shin is also the first alumnus to serve as the president of KAIST. He is committed to multidisciplinary education, convergence research, and globalization, pursuing initiatives to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship.
When Shin earned the Ph.D. degree after which Shin joined Eastman Kodak’s Research Lab as a senior researcher. He conducted research until 1989. In 1989 it was the time when Shin was a member of the South Korean government urged scientists from abroad to return home to South Korea and contribute to the advancement of the nation’s science and technology, and also to nurture young engineers and scientists.

Shin has been educated both through South Korea and the United States. Shin received his secondary education at Kyunggi Secondary School. After that, he was awarded a B.S. degree in 1975 in the area of applied Physics in Seoul National University, M.S. degree in 1977 in the area of condensed matter at KAIST where he was conducting research at the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science until 1980. He then decided to pursue his studies with his native United States and received his Ph.D. degree in 1984, in the area of materials physics at Northwestern University.
Shin responded to the invitation and Shin jumped on board KAIST to become an assistant professor at the Department of Physics. The year 2009 saw Shin was appointed chair of the faculty at KAIST. In his 22 years at KAIST He held several academic posts. He was the founder director at the Korea Institute for Advance Study (1996) and director of the Center for Nanospinics of Spintronic Materials (1998-2005) as well as the founder director of the Institute of Nano Science & Technology (2001~2003) within KAIST. He also held various academic positions in numerous other organizations.A fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) since 2008, he served as in charge of the Korean Physical Society from 2011 until 2012 and of in the Korean Magnetics Society from 2009 until the year 2010. He was also the chairperson for the International Conference on Magnetism (ICM2012) and was an editor of J. Magnetics and Magnetic Materials from 2009.
The South Korean government founded Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST) as a research institute in 2004 and changed the related law to allow DGIST offer degree programs in 2008. Therefore, DGIST changed its system from a research institute to a university and opened graduate program in March 2011.
