When she was 11 years old, Woods fell 20 feet off the tree, causing an irreparable injury in her spine in the vertebra T12-L1 (paraplegia) and necessitating her to utilize wheelchair.

Reprezenting Team GB at the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, Woods won a bronze medal in the 5,000m wheelchair final on the second attempt. He was originally awarded silver for finishing second on the 8th of September the 8th, a controversial protest stemming due to a crash (six athletes collided) during the final straight resulted in the race being staged again the following day. Woods then won a second Silver medal for the 1500m race, coming in very strong to take the lead over the Swiss Edith Hunkeler at the line and placed third in the marathon.

Woods also represented Team GB at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London where she won a silver medal in the women’s marathon. She came 6th in the 1500m, 8th in the 5000m and came 3rd in the heats of the 800m but failed to qualify for the final.

In September 2014, she recorded a half marathon personal best (50.36) to win the BUPA Great North Run.

On the 22nd of April, 2007 Woods was the winner of the London Marathon women’s wheelchair race, for the very first time with an unbeatable time of 1:50.40.

Rochelle “Shelly” Woods (born on June 4, 1986) is a renowned British Paralympic athlete from the suburb of Layton in Blackpool, Lancashire. Woods is a T54-level athlete, who is an athlete in wheelchair races, both both long and medium distance events. She has raced for two Paralympic Games, Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012, in which she took home three medals. She is an elite marathoner and won the elite women’s wheelchair race in both the 2012 and 2007 London Marathon.

In 2004, Woods set the record for women’s race in The Reading Half Marathon, set at 66 minutes and 37 seconds. As a wheelchair-bound athlete, she has enjoyed a great deal of success , having won the Great North Run in 2005 and setting the new British record for half-marathons during the course. Woods has also been the country’s record holder for 5,000 meters and also won silver medals in her debut London Marathon in 2005 and later in 2006.

Woods had always been a keen sportsperson, and after her injury she continued to be active in sports, including wheelchair basketball and swimming. She eventually decided to commit to athletics, stating in a 2011 interview that she made her choice to focus on racing, “because it was hardest”. She was first identified as a potential throwing athlete, but switched to racing under the advice of her first coach, Andrew Gill. Gill and woods parted amicably when she was 17, as Gill believed that he had taken her as far as he could and wanted to see Woods progress under another coach. She eventually teamed up with specialist wheelchair coach, Andrew Dawes.
