Shelley Vana is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on December 30, 1951 in Rochester, Pennsylvania, United States. Rochelle “Shelley” Vana (born December 30 1951) is an Democratic politician currently serving as the Palm Beach County Commissioner, serving in the 3rd District from 2008 until today. Prior to her election for the Broward County Commission, Vana was a member in the Florida House of Representatives from 2002 until 2008, and represented the 85th District.
In 2008, instead of run for re-election in the State House, Vana instead decided to run for Palm Beach County Commission in the 3rd District, challenging incumbent Republican Commissioner Bob Kanjian, who was appointed by the then-Governor Charlie Crist to the seat after the former commissioner quit following a conviction on corruption charges. Vana was up against Boynton Beach City Commissioner Carl McCoy in the Democratic primary, but she defeated McCoy easily, securing the nomination with more than 80 percent of the vote. When she ran for an election in general, she fought Kanjian. When Kanjian was adamant in the campaign for massive budget reductions, Vana argued that a more prudent approach was needed by saying, “I’d be the person who goes in with the scalpel.” Vana also stressed her support for reducing crime rates, reducing urban sprawl and traffic congestion as well as allowing affordable housing. The Sun-Sentinel harshly criticized Kanjian and noted that her “tendency for negativity, and frankly his own ego, have prevented him from being an effective leader on the County Commission and have only added to the dysfunction that all too often disrupts this already divisive board,” and supported Vana who they described as “a shrewd negotiator and a proven consensus builder who comes with a strong record of accomplishments after six years as a legislator in Tallahassee.” Vana narrowly defeated Kanjian and winning his first time on the County Commission with 57% of the votes.
Running for re-election in 2012, Vana was opposed by Cliff Montross, a retired policeman and the Republican nominee. In a low-key campaign, she campaigned on protecting residents’ access to emergency services and environmental protection, and was endorsed by the Sun-Sentinel, which called her a “productive member on the commission.” She ended up defeating Montross in a landslide, receiving 67% of the vote to his 33%.
In 2006, while running for her last term as a legislator, Vana was confronted during the Democratic primary by Jeff Murphy. Then, she was endorsed by the Sun-Sentinel in a statement Vana was “much better informed and more qualified to represent the district than her opponent” and the “ability to work with her Republican colleagues to get things done” merited a reelection. She ultimately defeated Murphy by a wide margin and won her primary by securing 77% of the votes. The general election was defeated to Robert Siedlecki, and campaigned on behalf of increasing the salaries of teachers, reshaping property insurance and reducing property taxes. She claimed that voters could look at her achievements as a legislator, including increasing the eligibility of KidCare as well as stating that “I go and pass bills you want me to pass. I have a record on which you can judge me.” The Sun-Sentinel also backed her candidacy during the primary election too by describing her as “simply an effective lawmaker who gets things done.” In the end, despite the close elections she was involved in before she beat Siedlecki with a huge margin and won re- election by five-and-a-half percent of votes.
