Rochelle “Shelley” Berkley (born Rochelle Levine on January 20th 1951) is a famous American lawyer and politician. She was the U.S. Representative for Nevada’s 1st congressional district from 1999 to 2013. She was elected in 2012 and ran as unsuccessful in her bid for the U.S. Senate. She is a part of the Democratic Party.

In 1996 and 1997 when she was working as a government affairs consultant to Las Vegas Sands, during the construction of The Venetian Berkley advised her employer to send contributions to the campaigns of the two Clark County Commissioners as well as two Clark County judges in order to get their approval for the proposed hotel. Berkley advised her employer the possibility to hire an uncle or cousin of county commissioner Erin Kenny and to grant the commission with a drink concession chairman Yvonne Atkinson Gates. Berkley also suggested making contributions to campaigns of judges whose names are mentioned because these judges “tend to help those who helped them.”

In March 1999, Berkley married Dr. Lawrence Lehrner, a practicing nephrologist in Las Vegas. Both Berkley and Lehrner have two children from prior marriages.

Congresswoman Berkley represented Nevada’s 1st congressional district from 1999 to 2013, serving seven terms as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. The district includes most of the city of Las Vegas as well as the Las Vegas Strip and the city of North Las Vegas. She is the second woman elected to Congress from Nevada, the first woman elected to the 1st district and the first elected as a Democrat.

Berkley was a member of her time in the Nevada Assembly from 1982 to 1984. She was also involved in civic activities locally. She also was a member of the Nevada University and Community College System Board of Regents from 1990 to 1998 and was named vice chair in 1998.

Berkley relocated along with her parents to Nevada while she was an elementary school junior studying at Fremont Junior High. After finishing high school she became the first family member to go to college. She began her undergraduate studies on the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She was a member of the Delta Zeta sorority. President of the student body for the Consolidated Students of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas during her senior year. Shelley received an honors degree from the university in 1972. She graduated with an B.A. with a major in Political Science.

After earning her J.D. degree in 1976 at the University of San Diego School of Law, Shelley returned to Las Vegas and began her professional career. Berkley was a lawyer for several years, most of them as a legal counsel of numerous Las Vegas casinos. She was also the director of the national office in the American Hotel-Motel Association.

In 1996, U.S. Congressman John Ensign won re-election in Nevada’s 1st congressional district with 50.1% of the vote, a 6.6% margin over Bob Coffin, the Democratic candidate. The day after, Berkley filed papers to run in the district. She raised $206,000 in the first six months and $410,000 in the next six months. Berkley was Democrats’ dream candidate, as she easily won the primary with 81.5% of the vote. Ensign decided to retire in order to run against U.S. Senator Harry Reid in the very close and competitive 1998 senate election. In the general election, she defeated Republican Don Chairez, a District Court Judge in Clark County with 49.2% of the vote.
