Shawn Christopher Respert (born February 6 1972) is an American retired professional basketball player who served as an assistant coach for the Chicago Bulls of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The six foot three” shooting guard who was born in Detroit, Michigan, he was a student at the Bishop Borgess High School. He became famous when he played college basketball on the campus of Michigan State University where his jersey has been removed. He was a professional player within the NBA for four seasons, from 1995 until 1999.
Respert was diagnosed with stomach cancer, but didn’t acknowledge it until the year 2005. He began experiencing stomach cramps at the final stages of his first season. The player noticed an area of lump under the belly button despite altering his diet. Respert found out he was suffering from cancer following an array of studies at Milwaukee’s St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in May 1996. After confirmation with an additional opinion, he was treated with daily radiation treatment for three months, losing 20 pounds during the process. The only people to know about the procedure were the Bucks trainers and doctors, the trainer Mike Dunleavy, Sr. and Michigan State backcourt partner Eric Snow. He only revealed the information to only a few people; not his family or girlfriend did, since “people don’t want to hear excuses in pro sports, even if the excuse is cancer.”
He was a professional player for a time in Italy in Italy for Adecco Milano (1999-2000) and Fillattice Imola (2001-2002). Also, he played as a player in Poland with Spojnia-Stargard Szczecinski (2002-2003).

Respert was a standout player at Michigan State. He along with the point guard Eric Snow combined to form one of the most prolific backcourt tandems the head coach Jud Heathcote’s Spartans. Respert played as the squad’s top scorer for 4 seasons with Michigan State and concluded his career as the second-highest scoring in the league of Big Ten players with 2,531 points (trailing only Calbert Cheaney) and the top scorer to score in Big Ten games with 1,545 points scored. He ended his career by being recognized as a unanimous first- team All-American in addition to Big Ten Player of the Year, as well as Sporting News and NABC National Player of the Year. He had an impressive 25.6 score average in his senior season of 1994-95. He quit East Lansing in the position of the Spartans the most prolific scorer in history and started the tradition of seniors who are leaving kissing the logo on center court in the final game at home.
Respert was chosen to be selected by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 1st round, which was the 8th overall selection in the 1995 NBA Draft. In 1995, the Blazers exchanged the player’s NBA rights over to the Milwaukee Bucks for the rights to Gary Trent and a first-round selection. Respert was transferred to Toronto in the second year of his career in which he averaged 5.6 points per game. He then played in Dallas in the following season, and later had an additional period playing for the Raptors. Respert ended his playing career with Phoenix in the season 1998-1999. He was a player with the Los Angeles Lakers for a short period of time in October 2000, but was released prior to taking part for them in NBA games for the team. Through the course of his NBA professional career Respert participated in 172 matches and scored 851 points with an average of 4.9 points per 13.7 minutes in a game.
Respert became a volunteer coach at Prairie View A&M in Texas in 2004. Then in early 2005, he was hired to be Director of Basketball Operations at Rice University for 2⁄2 years. Next, Respert spent two years as the Director of Player Development of the NBA’s minor league, the NBA Development League. In September 2008, he was hired by the Houston Rockets as the Director of Player Programs. On December 6, 2011 he was hired by the Minnesota Timberwolves as a player development coach. He was named an assistant coach by the Memphis Grizzlies in September 2013. He then moved to the Chicago Bulls as a director of player development in 2018.
