He was a faculty member in The University of Washington to co-found the University of Washington’s Center for Digital Arts and Experimental Media (DXARTS) program together with music composer Richard Karpen in 2001. in 2008 Brixey has been selected to be the University of Wash’s Floyd as well as the Delores Jones Endowed Chair in the Arts.

In 2013, Brixey became Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts at York University.

In 2017, Virginia Commonwealth University announced that Brixey was named the new dean of VCU School of the Arts, following the tenure of former dean Joseph H. Seipel. In August 2019, he resigned from his administrative role, while remaining a tenured faculty member at VCU.

Brixey was a graduate student in the Center for Advanced Visual Studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1986 until 1988. He was classified as a by MIT as an “environmental artist.” The next decade, he helped create the same “new media” programs at the universities of Kentucky and Washington prior to joining the faculty of the University of California, Berkeley as the founding director of the New Media Program.

Due to his earlier exposure to the arts and communications, Brixey adopted an unorthodox style of art-making in his time in the higher educational system. The 1980s were when he was a student at his first art class at the Kansas City Art Institute. In the 2016 TEDx presentation, Brixey claimed that institute had once ferried him and his classmates for 300 miles out into the western part of Kansas as a possible solution to students’ boredom and a lack of focus. Brixey claims that he and other students were dropped off separately in 10-mile increments.
