Atleo is a native of Vancouver, British Columbia. He is an advocate to protect the rights to the rights of First Nations in Canada and was previously The AFN’s Regional Chief for British Columbia. He is also a Hereditary Chief for the Ahousaht First Nation since 1999, a part of the Nuu-chahnulth Nation.

Atleo was elected for a second time on the 19th of July, 2012, during the final round of votes at AFN’s 2012 gathering of the leadership. Atleo resigned his post AFN Chief AFN Chief in May of 2014 in the midst of the controversy surrounding Bill C-33, also known as the First Nations Control of First Nations Education Act.

He was elected National Chief of the AFN at the annual leadership meeting on the 23rd of July 2009, beating Perry Bellegarde in just eight rounds of vote.
