Sharon Murdoch is one of the most popular and richest Cartoonist who was born on January 30, 1960 in Invercargill, Southland, New Zealand. Sharon Murdoch is a cartoonist born in 1960 in Invercargill, New Zealand. She was one of the few women to produce regularly editorial cartoons on politics for New Zealand mainstream media, and also draws an animated cat named Munro which is included in the daily crossword that appears in Fairfax newspapers. Murdoch has been awarded New Zealand Cartoonist of the Year three times in 2016 and 2017 , and 2018.

Murdoch was nominated as “Cartoonist of the Year” in 2014 and 2015. Canon Media Awards, and was awarded the award in 2016 and in 2017. She was the first time a woman was awarded the award. The awards were renamed Voyager Media Awards, and Murdoch took home the award again in the year 2018. The judges applauded the cartoonist’s “fresh style and satirical intelligence” and called her “gleeful and ingenious, and very funny, but she can shock us too” One judge said “Sharon Murdoch’s cartoons on politics meet the two essential rules of art. They are funny and are hilariously comical.” The cartoon she created The Alphabet for Needy Children was described as an “powerful observation about homelessness”.

In 2017 Murdoch was inducted into the Massey University’s College of Creative Arts’ Hall of Fame.

Murdoch began her full-time cartooning in her 50s following the encouragement of her former colleague Trace Hodgson, a political cartoonist for the New Zealand Listener. The first cartoons she did were of Munro the cat, which ran every day alongside the crossword in The Dominion Post, which continues to be published in Fairfax newspapers. Each contains a clue to the day’s crossword. She later began doing “political illustration” for the columnist Tracy Watkins; her first official political cartoon was published within The Waikato Times in August 2013. Her political cartoons are published within the Sunday Star Times, where she was appointed a political cartoonist in December 2014. The Christchurch Press, and occasionally the Dominion Post or the Waikato Times. They are usually cartoons but occasionally illustrations with other publications, like the story Growing Up Kiwi: Sophie’s Story.

Murdoch has studied graphic design at the Wellington Polytechnic School of Design and worked as graphic designer at the Wellington City Art Gallery, for the Legal Resources Trust, and with the group of activists known as the Wellington Media Collective as its sole woman graphic designer. In 1999/2000 , she participated in Volunteer Service Abroad in the township of Indinsane, South Africa, working in conjunction with an Xhosa Women’s Community Development Group that co-created comics about HIV/AIDS prevention as well as the early education of children. She is still working as an illustrator and designer.
