When she was a lawyer during 1983 Shari had been asked by the mother of a child to investigate the case of child custody where the mother believed that her three-year-old daughter was being sexually assaulted from her husband. When she was questioning her ex-husband during the cross-examination on the incest issue, she began screaming and yell, and then lose control, not knowing the reason. While the witness was speaking, Shari has claimed she felt nauseated and sweaty. Shari has said she could hear an echo of keyboards at the rear of the courtroom however, no one was present. The witness was given the excuse of touching her daughter’s sexual organs she shouted “These men just get away with it!” and jumped in the box of witnesses, attempting to choke him. The judge indicted her for contempt, sentenced her to prison for two days, and required her to attend therapy. In therapy, she claimed that she recalled her childhood abuse by her brother and father who was a writer. Shari’s father and brother have denied her claims and “after Louis Karney underwent a series of hypnotic regressions, clinical interviews and personality tests, licensed psychologist James J. Tschudy wrote in a Nov. 24, 1983, report that there was ‘abundant and convincing evidence’ that [Louis Karney] ‘simply could not have engaged in any sexual act with his young daughter or any other child.'” The report was published in 1988. Karney declared that “never actually sued [her] brother and father because [she doesn’t] need the money.”

From 1985 to in 1991 Shari and San Francisco attorney Mary R. Williams and California State Senator Bill Lockyer fought for passage of Senate Bill 108. In the Senate debates Shari admitted to personal molestation at the hands of her brother and father. It is a California legislation, that was amended California Civil Code Section 340.1 and came into effect on January. 1st of 1991, permits “delayed discovery” of childhood sexual abuse that occurred decades later than the abuse occurred. The new law’s limitation period is now 26, which is the age of legal responsibility. After the age of 26 the “delayed discovery” provision allows anyone who has shut down the emotional pain to file a lawsuit in the first three years after recognizing the abuse. For instance, a middle-aged person is now able to pursue a lawsuit against an older parent for the trauma at the age of four and in the same way as other victims of delayed discovery injuries, like asbestos poisoning. Six states have implemented similar legislation.
