In Bamawm, Victoria, McMahon was captain of Melbourne’s Melbourne Vixens in the ANZ Championship and also played for 11 seasons with the Melbourne Phoenix (as a captain for four seasons) in the earlier Commonwealth Bank Trophy. McMahon was the captain of the Vixens to winning the ANZ Championship title in 2009 by defeating Adelaide Thunderbirds Adelaide Thunderbirds in the grand final.

Late in 2011, McMahon considered her 2012 future in the Australian Diamonds. I had some thoughts of how it would be nice to finish my career and it definitely didn’t involve being carried off the court with a snapped Achilles, McMahon said. There’s a lot that has to happen before I do make it back in the team, she said. They’ve won a world championship without me so I’m certainly not expecting to walk straight back in.

On 31 March 2011, McMahon ruptured her Achilles tendon in an ANZ Championship game against Queensland Firebirds. Following surgery, she withdrew from the 2011 Netball World Championships in Singapore, and was considering her playing future. Australian coach Norma Plummer described McMahon as “probably the most athletic player of natural talent” to have played the game.

As of the month September, McMahon completed her 100th match in the national team and was captaining Australia to a victory of 36-33 in a match against New Zealand. McMahon was captain of the Australian team in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi and was named the Australian flag bearer for in the ceremonial opening.

McMahon’s career in international football started when she was picked for her first Australian U21 team back in 1996 based on her performance in her time with the Victorian under 21 squad. In 1997 McMahon made her debut with the entire national team in a match against that of the Jamaican National team, in Jamaica. Her age was just the tiniest player of the Australian team that took home the gold medal in netball during the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur.

McMahon was captain of the Vixens from the start of their inaugural season in 2008 to the end of 2011 and was captain alongside Bianca Chatfield from 2009.
