Sarif is a native of London, England, to Indian parents who moved to South Africa in the early 1960’s to escape apartheid. She was a student of English writing in London’s University of London, then pursued an Masters in English at Boston University.

Her film from 2011 The House of Tomorrow is an account of her participation in the TEDx Holy Land conference which brought the together of Arab women and Israeli females to talk about topics that shared fascination with technology, entertainment and design.

Shamim Sarif (born on the 24th September, 1969) is a British novelist and filmmaker from South Asian and South African origins. Her work often addresses different aspects of identity such as race, gender and sexuality. She often draws on her personal experiences with heterosexual, cross-cultural love.

Her heritage inspired her to create her first book, The World Unseen (2001) which examines issues of gender, race and sexuality. The novel was later turned into a movie with Lisa Ray and Sheetal Sheth. The novel was heavily influenced by the tales of Sarif’s maternal grandmother as well as the relatives’ Indian as well as South African heritage.

On 23 September 2015 she married producer Hanan Kattan at the Chelsea Registry Office in London, after nearly 20 years together. They have two sons, Ethan (b. 1999) and Luca (b. 2002). Sarif is openly lesbian and described I Can’t Think Straight to be semi-autobiographical. Sarif claims Muslim origins. She has stated that Jeanette Winterson’s The Passion is one of her favorite books.
