Shaji N. Karun is one of the most popular and richest Film Director who was born on January 1, 1952 in Kollam, Kerala, India. Shaji N. Karun was born New Year’s Day, 1952 as the eldest son of the late Mr. N. Karunakaran and Mrs. Chandramati in present-day Kollam district, which was once part of the state known as Travancore state (now Kerala), India. The family relocated to Thiruvananthapuram which was the capital city of the state, in 1963. He did his schooling in Palkulangara H.S. and received a bachelor’s diploma at University College, Thiruvananthapuram. In 1971, he joined the Film and Television Institute of India and earned his cinematography diploma. The film that he was awarded for his diploma Genesis (1974) which was written and produced by Rahul Dasgupta, won many awards and began his career. He received the GOLD medal upon graduation in 1974. After graduating, he worked at ISRO Ahmedabad, Mumbai TV, Madras Film Industry on contract until 1975, when Kerala State Film Development Corporation (KSFDC) was set to begin its journey. He was responsible along with its KSFDC’s founder Chairman P R S Pillai, and later its Director of Operations G.Vivekanandan for planning, developing future plans for KSFDC to restore its Film Industry that was till was then based in Madras. His involvement in cinema-related activities that were meaningful thanks to the contributions of KSFDC and other well-known giants of Malayalam filmmakers has led to several landmark achievements for the Malayalam Cinema internationally and nationally. 1998, he founded and was the Director of the FIRST Film Academy in INDIA as the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy under Government of Kerala and leadership of the then Culture minister Marxist late Shri T K Ramakrshnan. In the same year that he began his International Film Festival (IFFK) in 1998 as a competitive event, and FIAPF declared the festival to be International competitive during his time. He has shown three films: PIRAVI, SWAHAM, VANAPRATHAM consecutively to official sections of CANNES which is a remarkable feat for any filmmaker in the world in which SWAHAM was the first film SWAHAM was a part of the competition at Cannes in 1994. Since then, until now there have been there have been no films have come from INDIA have been selected to be a contender to win Cannes’ Palme d’Or. The only MALAYALAM filmmaker to win THREE National Best Films (PIRAVI VANAPRASTHAM, KUTTYSRANK, and VANAPRASTHAM) to be used in Malayalam language.
The project Gaadha was revealed in September 2012. Although it was planned to begin filming in November 2014, the project has been put off until the next time. The music was composed by Polish composer Zbigniew Pricener.
As of January 2018 Shaji is completing the post-production of a new movie titled Olu with Shane Nigam and Esther Anil playing the lead roles. In a recent interview, Shaji revealed that Olu is the tale of a girl who gets gang raped and sunk to the bottom of the backwaters where she can mysteriously survive and live for the next nine months -until she delivers her ‘baby from rape’. The film will attempt to convey her perception of innocent feminine desires – spiritual and transcendental feelings.”
He has also produced more than a dozen short movies and documentaries. In addition to creating film, Shaji Karun has been an active juror at numerous international film festivals, and a prominent participant in both academic and governmental arenas. He was the first Chairman of the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy, the first academy to study film and television in India and also the Executive Chairman of the International Film Festival of Kerala from 1998 until 2001.

Shaji Neelakantan Karaun (born on January 1, 1952) is an Indian cinematographer and film director. The film he directed his debut Piravi (1988) was awarded the Camera d’Or – Mention d’honneur at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival. He was the chairman of the inaugural ceremony of the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy, the first institute for film and television in India and also the director for the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) from 1998 until 2001. He is most well-known for his award-winning movies Piravi (1988), Swaham (1994), Vanaprastham (1999) and Kutty Srank (2009). He was awarded the National Award for Best Director for his debut film Piravi. Shaji was engaged to Anasuya Warrier on 1 January 1975. She is the child of P. K. R. Warrier which was close to him in Trivandrum for a long time. After a brief time in the southern Indian city Madras and then he moved back to Thiruvananthapuram in 1976 when he was appointed a film officer with the state-run Film Development Corporation. They have two sons, Anil as well as Appu. His collaboration with famous Malayalam filmmaker G. Aravindan began at the time of his death. He continued to work alongside notable directors like G. Aravindan, K. G. George and M. T. Vasudevan Nair as cinematographer. His work also includes various activities of the Government of India and Kerala in which he was employed in capacities of advisory status for policy decisions. The 20th International film festival in Kerala held by the state government of Kerala and held in 2015, December 4-11, in his advisory capacity , was hailed by the media and movie lovers as one of the top festivals that have been held to date. August 2018, he was chosen to be the eighteenth president of Purogamana Kala Sahitya Sangham (Progressive Arts and Literary Organisation) which is an Association for Art and Letters. As of May 31 the Kerala government Kerala was appointed the chairman of the Kerala State Film Development Corporation and took the office starting on the 17th of June, 2019.
Shaji made his directorial debut with the Malayalam film Piravi (“The Birth”, 1988), which won him the prestigious Caméra d’Or – Mention d’honneur at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival. While Piravi was about the grief of a father who loses his son, Shaji’s second film, Swaham (1994) continued with the theme of grief. Swaham was selected to compete at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival. Vaanaprastham (“The Final Dance”, 1999) dealt with the identity crisis faced by an actor. Mohanlal played the lead role in this film. He directed the film Nishad, made in Hindi, which was completed in May 2002, and premiered in the Fukuoka International Film Festival held in September 2002 in Japan. His latest film is titled Kutty Srank with Mammootty playing the lead role. The film was released theatrically in Kerala on July 2010.Swapaanam with Jayaram and Kadambari in lead roles has premiered at Dubai International Film Festival on 8 December 2013, a rare recognition for Malayalam Cinema as the World premier screening outside India. Olu, his latest film, under ‘fantasy perception’ and narrative, had chosen the inaugural film of Indian Panorama film selections presented in International Film Festival of India Goa-2018. OLU has also been chosen as the “OPENING FILMS” of TWO major International film festivals- Internationa film festival of INNSBRUCK 2019.AUSTRIA, ISOLA Cinema International film festival 2019, SLOVENIA. Olu also won the National Film Award for Best Cinematography (2018) award in the 66th National Film Awards.
