He was a Minister in the federal cabinet of Najib Razak from May 2013 to May 2018 and is a Member of Parliament of Malaysia for the seat of Arau, representing the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO). He was the Menteri Besar of Perlis from 1995 to 2008.
