He took home both the 400 and 800 metres events in 1977 at the Central American and Caribbean Championships in Athletics. His performance in the 400m final took place in a field that comprised Cuba’s Olympic champion Alberto Juantorena and set a personal best of 45.66.
His personal best was in the 800 meters time of 1:45.2 recorded at Helsinki 1978, is an official Jamaican world record.

When he was a kid, Newman was a proficient cricketer. In the 1970s, he was a member of his Jamaica U19s side alongside Jeff Dujon and Michael Holding.
Newman was a representative of Jamaica at two different events of during the 1976 Summer Olympics. Newman made it to the semi-finals of the 800 meters and placed fifth in a controversial manner after being bumped in his race US racer Rick Wohlhuter. He was disqualified after the race. American was disqualified following the race, but was later reinstated, a decision that resulted in the loss of Newman an opportunity to compete at the end of. He was also a part of the four-x 400 meter relay team who made it to the finals and came in the fifth spot.
At the 1978 Commonwealth Games he won silver medals in the 800 metres and the 4 × 400 metres relay.
