Severina Biography

Severina is one of the most popular and richest Singer who was born on April 21, 1972 in Split, Split-Dalmatia, Croatia. Severina Kojic (nee Vuckovic, born 21 April 1972) who is also known professionally as Severina is a Croatian performer, singer-songwriter and actress. In 2006 she was featured in the Croatian weekly Nacional included her in the top 100 influential Croats and called the singer-songwriter “the only bona fide Croatian celebrity”.

In 2004 Vuckovic was implicated in a globally known sex scandal following an sex tape of her as well as Bosnian Croat businessman Milan Lucic was leaked to the Internet that was then revealed to The Croatian newspaper Index.hr. This graphic tape as well as the reality it was reported that Lucic was married at the time the tape was recorded shocked the general public. Vuckovic filed a lawsuit against the website which released the tape to claim damages, alleging that the video was taken from her and is her intellectual property however, her lawsuit was dismissed by an Zagreb district court in July 2004.

Severina’s long-anticipated tenth studio album Zdravo Marijo (Hail Mary), mostly composed by Goran Bregović, was released in May 2008. Ater having made several public appearances wearing clothes depicting religious imagery (most notably a tight shirt with an image of the Virgin Mary with Severina showing ample cleavage), some protested the abuse of religious elements, calling them offensive. However, the album has been popular and Severina released four more official music videos for singles “Tridesete” composed by Sezen Aksu, “Gade”, “Haljinica Boje Lila” and “Zdravo, Marijo” (title track) composed by Bregović. On 15 December 2009, Severina released her next single called “Lola”, which is the part of the Miligram compilation.

In 2003, Severina got her first part in The Croatian National Theatre in Rijeka (HNK Rijeka) and played the main part for the musical Karolina Rijecka (English: Caroline of Rijeka). In 2004, she staged and performed as a single- camera drama Cekajuci Svog Covika (Waiting for My Mann) which was staged at the Kerempuh theatre in Zagreb. In 2007, she was selected for one of the principal roles in HNK’s production of the musical Gospoda Glembajevi (The Glembays; inspired by Miroslav Krleza’s 1929 show). Although the casting of Severina was criticized by some critics who questioned her acting skills The musical launched in March 2007 to great success. Severina also appeared in a 2007 Bosnian movie Duhovi Sarajeva that was set in Sarajevo. In 2007, she had an appearance of 5 minutes her character in her role in the Slovenian movie Petelinji zajtrk (Rooster’s Breakfast).

The style of Severina is described as pop with a variety of folk and cabaret- inspired influences. When she was a kid she was a part-time performer in opera and theatre productions in her home town of Split. In the 1980s and after having received numerous prizes in local events, she began an active career in the field at a young age. This eventually led to her shifting from Split to Zagreb in 1989, to grow her work.

The song caused some controversy in Croatia when a few journalists and musicologists claimed the song resembled the music of Serbia. However, prominent Croatian ethno-musicians such as Dunja Knebl and Lidija Bajuk disagreed, and both the song’s composer Boris Novković and Severina herself have claimed that the song includes Croatian folk music influences from the Dalmatian Zagora (Inner Dalmatia) such as ganga and rere singing and lijerica instrumentation. After the contest she started working on her 10th studio album together with Goran Bregović, one of the most successful music composers in the Balkans.
