On October 2, 2017, Kaplin was elected as the party leader for the Socialist Party of Ukraine during the congress. He also declared his intention to be part in the presidential election. On the 27th of January, 2018, at the “joint meeting of the political council and the central control commission of the Socialist Party of Ukraine” Illia Kyva [uk; ru] was ejected from membership in the Socialist Party of Ukraine and was stripped of the position as head of the political organization. Kyva was elected to the Socialist Party on 3 November 2018 to be the President of Ukraine during the election of 2019.
