Sergo Chakhoyan was born Leninakan, Armenian SSR] (now Gyumri, Armenia) where many of the world’s top weightlifters originate from. 1 He was the champion national of Armenia several times and also a record-holder. He took home the silver medal at the 1994 World Weightlifting Championships, and also set a new world record in the snatch as well as in the clean and jerk, weighing 175.5 kg. Chakhoyan became only the second Armenian weightlifter, following Israel Militosyan to set a world record. Chakhoyan competed at the 1995 World Championships and won the bronze medal in the snatch. He also competed in the Atlanta Summer Olympics in 1996 in which he took home an Olympic silver medal for the snatch. He was ranked sixth in the contest.

Since 1997, he began performing with an Australian flag. He has been an all- time Australian champion and the record holder for Australia in both Australia and Oceania. In 1999, he competed at the World Championship and took the 10th spot at the tournament. Chakhoyan was able to regain the sixth position at the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympics. Chakhoyan broke the Australian record for the snatch by gaining 175kg recognized with bronze medal. He took home three medals in gold at the 2001 Goodwill Games in Brisbane and also set two world records and an Australian records during the Goodwill Games. The world record for the snatch was 181.5 kg. He also set a new Australian record of 210 kilograms and the world record for the double world record of 391.5 kg. In 2003, he took part in the Russian championships in the snatch. He set the world record at 182.5 kilograms. He also set the world record of 392.5 kilograms for the duo. He was awarded an Olympic bronze at the 2003 World Weightlifting Championships. He took home his gold in the Snatch.
